The way I see it, if I like it, it's good, period. So, if someone mocks my music taste, they just don't know, but now I know that they don't know, and that they're a dick.
I'll discuss music all day, even if I don't like it I'll be fair and try to figure out and explain why, not just trash it. If another person can do the same thing, be honest but respectful and analytical, it can be a great conversation. One thing I don't do is lie and say I like something. I'm not like "pssssh NO that shit SUCKS" but I'll say it's not my thing. But even music I don't like, it's interesting to listen to and understand what I don't like about it.

I dunno. At least the conversation is normally more civil than the "Hotdog is/isn't a Sandwich" crowd

One of my biggest problems discussing music with people earnestly is trying to not sound like a hipster. Someone asks me about my favorites, then I tell them and they stare at me blankly, then I feel compelled to try and make them feel better and explain why they haven't heard of them. It's usually not even that obscure, it's just a bit off the beaten path.
Then again there's nothing like someone acting like you should know what they are talking about. I have a roommate who listens to nothing but my little pony and five nights at Freddie's fanbase created music, and they act like I should know every song they reference despite me having no interest in the topics.

I love discussing music, it has helped expand my tastes greatly and introduced me to some types of music I wasn't into originally

You forgot a perfect circle and dream theater for gamefaqs rock board favorites in the early 2000s.
Seriously I have never truly opened up about all my tastes to people. Like for instance this week I've been really enjoying the disco star wars theme by meco lol. But I usually just say general bands like metallica, muse and such.
But hell there's days I'll run to chvrches.

I think it's a pretty important quality to be able to stand by and explain what you like and don't like. If someone thinks less of you as a person because of what you listen to then the lesson learned is probably not to talk to that person much, as opposed to just not expressing enjoyment for said music. Doesn't mean you have to come out and say you like Nickelback before anyone even asks but if it comes up it shouldn't be a point of shame. In my family/circle of friends the biggest challenge in talking about music is just that no one has ever heard of what anyone else listens to.

Yeah, I know what you mean. A vast majority of my friends listen to really mainstream stuff, so I feel like a dick if I say, "You wouldn't have heard of the band/artist I'm listening to" even when it's true.

I remember in the early 2000's when AOL chat rooms were pretty popular and had a lot of activity. I found myself in a Heavy Metal chat room. Back then, I was a huge metalhead, still am to this very day, as I love heavy metal music and I am always on the look out for new and exciting metal bands.
Anyways I went into the chatroom expecting likeminded individuals. Boy, oh boy was it a mistake to enter into this chatroom on this day. I mentioned some of my favorite bands included Iron Maiden, Control Denied, King Diamond, Opeth, Iced Earth, Opeth, Arch Enemy, etc.
Responses I received were "THOSE bands aren't metal! You are a poser! Only poser losers listen to Iron Maiden. They're fake metal."
"Real metal is (insert norway or swedish metal band that no one except maybe two or three people has heard of).
It was a real nightmare being in that room. I became so digusted with the elitist attitudes that I ended up just leaving the room. What's really ironic is they hated Maiden, Opeth, Iced Earth, and King Diamond so much that the supposed "real metal bands" that they liked wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for Maiden, Priest, King Diamond, and so forth. I could never understand why they had such an elitist attitude on what metal is or was.

Reading the latest posts in this thread has reminded me, another reason I don't discuss music online is the fear of being labelled a hipster. I mean, a lot of my favourite music in the last few years has been very obscure underground rap. Not only will I not discuss music online (as whenever I've tried in the past it hasn't gone well), but I won't discuss any of my interests online. Hell, I'll just list the reasons why I won't discuss any of my interests: Music - Pretty much what everyone else in this thread has said, elitists and arguments are a nightmare. Pro Wrestling - This used to be the one interest of mine that I discussed online with people, but after years of forum posts (not so much here, but on another forum) and countless pointless arguments and fighting, I had to stop for my own sake. The biggest reason I don't discuss wrestling now isn't even really that, it's that my opinions on pro wrestling differ drastically to the so called 'Internet Wrestling Community', and I'd rather not even bother with the headache of it all. Anime - I don't discuss anime online for a multitude of reasons, but the main one is that if you discuss anime online, you're automatically labelled a 'weeaboo'. Movies - Same as music really, so many film elitists are out there ready to argue pointlessly and I'd rather not bother. Video Games - This is a big one, and one that bothers me on multiple levels. As a console only gamer, I can't discuss gaming at all on the internet as I'll be instantly labelled a 'console peasant' by the elitist 'PC Master Race' which constantly makes me feel worthless and miserable. That's the main reason I don't discuss gaming on the internet, but there are some others. Those are the main ones, but I usually don't bother discussing much at all online anymore, as I can't handle the stress and anxiety it causes. The only way I can see to stay away from the arguments and whatnot is to stay quiet and fade away, keeping every opinion to myself, my worthless, meaningless existence automatically negating any right I have to an opinion in the first place. So yeah... Why would you care if you're labeled a weeb? Not like some random person on the internet's opinion really matters. And even if you are a weeb, wouldn't it just be healthier to accept that? Because of the negative stereotypes and negative connotations attached to the label? Besides, I don't like labelling myself.

Hey OP now you really need to tell us what music you like.
It's funny I'm the other way around. I am so picky on music I hate over 95% of stuff released. But I'm not being snobby, I'll be the first to admit I know nothing about music. I just like what I like.
I mean I saw a thread here where people were complaining about Coldplay, I love them. I prefer Limp Bizkit's Beyond Blue eyes more than the original. That Michael Jackson song Alien Ant Farm covered? I love their verson but not the original. To me I don't give a crap what people think about my taste in music, I know it's not great, I just know what I like.

I'm the opposite, I'm very open to talking about Japanese girl groups alongside American bands of all different genres.
I like what I like and anyone who gives me hell can f*** right off.

I usually like discussing music and suggesting stuff in music threads because I think I'm pretty open-minded about what I listen to. If anyone else agrees, cool. If no one likes it, I don't mind either.
Like I'm not the kind of person who will put someone down based on trivial interests, unless those interests go into deviant/socially unacceptable categories, so I don't mind talking about stuff like music, games, TV et cetera. I'll even get into a certain band if someone is genuine and enthusiastic enough about it. If someone on a forum flat out tells me "___ sucks", then I'll probably end the conversation instead of trying to feed any additional animosity.
I mean, not dating someone because he or she likes a certain artist is really pushing it. God forbid your significant other is an excellent person otherwise.
The only place I'm kinda worried about discussing music on would be audiophile/videophile forums (and subreddits). Some of the discussions there over topics as simple as brands of speakers and types of wiring can turn nasty.

People like what they like, man.
It makes no sense to get all upset because someone like something you don't. And the opposite it true as well, people liking the same things you do. What, are we going to form a club or something?
