Yeah, it's even more of a no-no for me than politics or religion.
I like to think I'm pretty good at not letting others opinions get to me because of how wide the spectrum of personal taste can be. Don't like the same wrestles I do? Whatever. Don't like the same movies I do? I admit I like weird movies anyway. Video games? That's fine, I'm pretty snobby there. The list goes on...my point is, as long as you're respectful, I'll talk and butt heads about any subject...
...except music.
I don't know what it is, but I'm almost afraid to go into a topic and mention what music I like. It seems the ridicule that you can invite for daring to like different music is just more cutting than with any other medium. Maybe it's because I'm a lot more "casual" (whatever that even means these days) with what music I like and don't really dislike a whole lot, but it always feels like bringing a butter knife to a gun fight. I can wade through thousands of posts telling me I shouldn't like some of the wrestlers I like and not bat and eye, but I'm legit afraid of confessing that I listen to *bleep*.

You would NOT like the GameFAQs forums in the early 2000s. That was a rough area to like music that someone else didn't like. Like, unless the artist was Opeth or Tool, you'd get the peanut gallery after you.

I would be glad to discuss what I am into, but sometimes people are too snarky when it comes to musical taste. I remember reading an OkCupid profile where a girl said that she would not want to be associated with someone who likes Katy Perry. It's fine if she doesn't like the artist, but to go through great lengths to shut someone out because he or she is a fan of someone she does not like, that is stupid.

The weird thing too is that, unless she were to rummage through your music collection wanting to verify that you have no Katy Perry music anywhere in your possession (which means you have bigger problems than music), there'd be no real way for her to know that you like Katy Perry. It's not like it'd ever have to come up in a conversation.

I will say that I have also seen a page where a girl said that she would not date a guy who is into rap and hip-hop music, as she said something to the effect that she doesn't think she would get along with someone who likes that stuff. That is stupid as well.

I'm pretty open with my disdain and will definitely tell people all about it if I feel the situation calls for it. Nothing good comes out of writing off entire genres or blatantly insulting someone's tastes though.
I'm always amazed that there are so many people though who say things like they don't really like music, or they can't tell me any acts off the top of their head that they like. It's alien to me the idea of being so unaware that you could listen to an entire album and not know or even want to know who performed it.
I am really curious to what OP listens to though that is so shameful he's afraid to tell people about it. I'm gonna guess he's like the main character of Pitch Perfect and composes his own mashups of nothing but Creed and Shaquille O'Neal together.

I am the opposite.
If someone's musical opinions were entirely different from me I would not care. But if I heard anyone besmerch Alex Wright, claim Sasha Banks was not the Boss,Rusev was not a perfect genlteman or say the words New Day Sucks then that would be fighting words.

Like, unless the artist was Opeth or Tool, you'd get the peanut gallery after you. I love Opeth and Tool although I did not discover the band Opeth until about 4 years ago. Sounds to me I would have loved GAMEFAQs in the early 2000s because then I could have argued and debated with other people which Tool and Opeth songs/albums were the best.

You're not alone. Christina Ricci doesn't tell almost anyone what she listens to, since people do really judge harshly on that kind of thing sometimes.

Reminds me of the Deviantart music forum.
God forbid should you prefer My Chemical Romance over Pink Floyd.
Or if you like Linkin Park than you obviously know f*** all about music.
I admit I use to be a bit snobby when it came to music, but realised how stupid I sounded so stopped.
Why should it bother me if somebody likes something I don't?.. Whatever you keep doing your thing and I'll do mine.
I think this is why I avoid most music forums now a days, God forbid I should dare to have a musical opinion that different to someone else's.

Not only will I not discuss music online (as whenever I've tried in the past it hasn't gone well), but I won't discuss any of my interests online.
Hell, I'll just list the reasons why I won't discuss any of my interests:
Music - Pretty much what everyone else in this thread has said, elitists and arguments are a nightmare.
Pro Wrestling - This used to be the one interest of mine that I discussed online with people, but after years of forum posts (not so much here, but on another forum) and countless pointless arguments and fighting, I had to stop for my own sake. The biggest reason I don't discuss wrestling now isn't even really that, it's that my opinions on pro wrestling differ drastically to the so called 'Internet Wrestling Community', and I'd rather not even bother with the headache of it all.
Anime - I don't discuss anime online for a multitude of reasons, but the main one is that if you discuss anime online, you're automatically labelled a 'weeaboo'.
Movies - Same as music really, so many film elitists are out there ready to argue pointlessly and I'd rather not bother.
Video Games - This is a big one, and one that bothers me on multiple levels. As a console only gamer, I can't discuss gaming at all on the internet as I'll be instantly labelled a 'console peasant' by the elitist 'PC Master Race' which constantly makes me feel worthless and miserable. That's the main reason I don't discuss gaming on the internet, but there are some others.
Those are the main ones, but I usually don't bother discussing much at all online anymore, as I can't handle the stress and anxiety it causes. The only way I can see to stay away from the arguments and whatnot is to stay quiet and fade away, keeping every opinion to myself, my worthless, meaningless existence automatically negating any right I have to an opinion in the first place.
So yeah...

I've gradually been teaching myself not to give a crap about sharing my music tastes. Keep in mind, the key word there is "share", that's not the same as actually discussing them.
So many people have the attitude that what you listen to automatically defines you as a person, which is horseshit. I and most people's tastes are really all over the place, because we tend to be versatile.
There's the belief that if you like a handful of mainstream acts you're either A) a braindead sheep who likes "easily digestable" music, or B) not looking hard enough for "the good music out there". Or, I dunno, maybe this particular artist or band's sound appeals to people not because it's safe for the (allegedly) ignorant masses, but because they're TALENTED and a wide range of people acknowledge and enjoy their work for it?

See, that kind of thing, I'd get a date, make an arrangement with the restaurant, then at the end, tell them I'd have a lovely time, then shout out "Now hit my music". Jump on the table, rip open my shirt to show a Katy Perry tshirt while "Hot N Cold" plays.
