I've found that wrestling is the only thing I like that when I talk to people about it their brains get locked into a loop.
Me: I like pro wrestling Them You it's fake right? Me:Yes.The outcome is predetermined but the majority of the match is called by the wrestlers and though they try not to do to the physical nature of wrestling injuries are common Them: But it's fake Me: facepalm
So why is this? Why do non-fans get caught into the it's fake loop? Why doesn't it happen for other forms of entertainment? Secondly do the "it's fake" people think that they are telling fans something we don't know? That we thought that this was all real and if we only knew the truth we'd stop watching?

The majority of people who say this haven't watched wrestling since they thought it was legit.

I haven't really heard that from anyone under the age of 40 since the curtain was lifted.
On the rare times I do hear it, I remind them that by saying things like "So is Breaking Bad, and you watch that."
Kind of OT: Speaking of the curtain being lifted, when was this exactly? I mean, I know some time in the 80's, Vince admitted it was predetermined so he could get out of some regulations, but I don't know how public that was.
So, is it then the "shades of gray" promo?

It creates distance.
They are the big, smart adult with refined tastes and you are the slobbering retard that watches men soap opera and do choreographed nonsense in their underwear.
These same people often enjoy other works of fiction.
It's useless. I'll be the first guy to call 'rasslin out as being dumb, but I love it. I love it because I loved it when I was 6 and grew into an adult that can appreciate why it works and who's really good at it.

They think they are being amusing and clever by saying this. In reality they are achieving neither of these aims.

I always remind them that movies like Die Hard and stuff like that aren't real either. That usually dumbfounds them and they have nothing to say because it's true. Wrestling is always going to have that stigma.

Wrestling is always going to have that stigma. It's because of all of those years trying to pass itself off as legitimate. Bruce Willis never tried to claim he was really John McClain and had killed Hans Gruber. It doesn't make the person saying "you know it's fake" any smarter or more clever, but that is why the stigma is there.

It's too put down and denigrate wrestling fans. It's like saying you're stupid and an idiot and you don't even realize it. It's something to make the people saying feel better and smarter about themselves.

Does this still happen? I haven't been "it's faked" since junior high school. The cat's been out of the bag far too long.
I definitely get why people would ask this question in the days of kayfabe where they wanted you to think it's real. I get annoyed when people I know get wrapped up in reality television as if any of that is real, I definitely get the stigma of someone not wanting to be worked into believing something that's portraying itself as real when it isn't, but it's so obvious wrestling is fake that there's really no sense in pointing it out like you're getting one over anybody.

Because they probably don't understand the showmanship of it.

I tell them "So are your mom's orgasms" wait a minute....
Maybe we should just call them assholes.
What I HATE is when someone refers to it as "Two men who oil themselves up and roll around in their underwear"
That used to be a popular "I've heard a dozen others say it, so I think I will say it too to make you feel bad"
Go to hell.

I honestly think the better comparison is to ask them if they watch any reality shows.

Because many people in this world like to feel they have the inside track on something, that they know the truth and will not hesitate to tell others in the name of self aggrandisement. They don't appreciate that people already know it's fake and don't need to be told that repeatedly, but they do it anyway, it's the same mindset that means so many of the wrestling PPV pages on wrestling have everyone participated in scripted matches and staged bouts written throughout the article just to hammer home how faaaaaake and unworthy it is, like we're lucky to have wikipedia pages at all, something that doesn't happen in other scripted forms of entertainment. Comic book articles aren't littered with the words fictional, nor are movies, but here we are.

Can't believe people still say this. They don't even realize how stupid it makes them sound. Do they tell people at plays that it's fake? Do they tell adults Santa Claus isn't real?

I honestly think the better comparison is to ask them if they watch any reality shows. That is interesting because generally the same people who are so quick to call out wrestling fans for liking fake stuff seem to think reality TV is somehow more "real" even though its just as fake. If its entertaining, its entertaining - fake or real. But more to the OP's point, I think it has to do with the idea that its supposed to be a organized fighting league with titles, #1 contenders, etc etc, so people still get thrown by the idea of being interested in it when everything is predetermined. Those people aren't probably that familiar with wrestling and why its entertaining as an art/athletic display more so than MMA/football/etc which is more about winning than it is about entertaining. Which is strange to me because when someone says "you know its fake right," I'm always aghast at the notion that I'd actually watch wrestling if it were real. The stuff they do - if it were real - is inhumane and the number of gravely injured or straight up dead people would be horrifying. But largely it just comes from people only knowing wrestling from before the 80s. Like others, I haven't heard anyone under the age of 35 actually bring it up in a long time. More often than not the real issue now is that for most people, wrestling stopped after the Rock & Stone Cold left the business. CM Punk is the only guy that's even come close to influencing the zeitgest like that and he's still a long ways off. For me, the new "Wrestling is fake, you know?" has been replaced with, "You STILL watch wrestling? I didn't even know it was still around after the Rock left to make movies."

I had a friend that used to get mad at the notion that I or anyone could actually like it.
He thought it was a waste that someone would bother to work out, get ripped and play around with a "fake sport"
We never got into any arguments or anything, but I don't know why he let it get to him.
