Knowing what we know now about him. At that time it was just striking it while he was still hot with the crowd. But years later, it pretty much looks like he hasn't evolved at all. With that said, would you still take that risk and give him the title at Hell in a Cell 2012? Even if you just hot shot it back to Punk at Survivor Series 2012 with the Shield's debut helping Punk get the title back. Would you still have shaken things up back in 2012?

Yeah. I've never personally been a huge fan but he was CRAZY over and it's not like much else has been working these last few years. Maybe let's try to listen to the crowd, they seem to like The Big Guy.
I think at this point that ship has sailed but yeah, a few years ago I would have pulled the trigger.

Ryback back then was a perfect wrecking ball character, to me this type of character should always be in every generation of wrestling, Ryback could have been a full time version of Brock Lesnar.
Right now the damage has been done to Ryback and will only be a competent midcarder unless he gets over in a new surprising way.

I want to say yes but with everything happened with Shield, TLC, the Punk RAW TLC, and the rise of Bryan delaying that would probably not be best if you could even catch all that lightning again. Then again, Ryback could have been made and the star they need now with that quick hotshot. For as much as I love that Ryback, no, I wouldn't do it.

I do not even like him, but Yes. They have pulled the triggers on the wrong guys a lot. If Ryback and Barrett got a chance, they still could be main eventers today. Both were more over than Del Rio and Sheamus ever were, yet were never given the chance.

I wouldn't have given him the title then, but I certainly wouldn't have turned him heel either (though that wasn't for a few months, if I remember correctly).

In hindsight, no. But at the time Ryback was super over enough to justify it. Shame he had to be sacrificed to Punk because Cena got injured.

It was as over as he was ever likely to get and would've made him a main eventer for the rest of his tenure.
It was dumb not to do it.

I wouldn't have given him the title in 2012, but I also wouldn't have put him against Punk at HIAC '12 either.

No. If it were up to me CM Punk would still be champion trying to beat Sammartino's record.

I'd have done it, since he was over as hell and I hated most of Punk's title reign anyway. And it really wouldn't have made much of a difference if Ryback won the title then Punk got it back with the Shield's help a month later. At least then Ryback wouldn't have been such a choke artist.
Failing that one, I'd have had him win the Rumble and face Big Show at Mania for the World title. Would've been way better than that Swagger / Alberto feud to be sure, or the Henry / Ryback one, and Cena / Rock could have been set up without the Rumble.

would've made a lot more sense then having Punk drop the belt to a part timer

I agree that Ryback should've beaten Punk, but at that time I would've considered the Big Gold a step down for The Big Guy. Cena and The Rock could've been set up without the Rumble...if they didn't bill the first match as "Once in a Lifetime". The Rumble win for Cena and giving Rock the belt was done to get around that and make it look like their paths crossed by chance.

As usual, hindsight is 20/20 in professional wrestling.
Ryback was a WWE creation with a limited arsenal and a superface that was 100% over with the crowd. When was the last time that happened? While Punk was a superheel at the time that should have been defeated. Ryback should have won the WWE Title at Wrestlemania against CM Punk, where Punk would have gained his cherished main event 'Mania moment. It was a perfect example of opportunity falling into everyone's lap.

No, only being I wanted CM Punk vs The Rock at the Rumble. If Rock wasn't a factor, then hell yeah, he'd be in such a different spot right now.

Ryback was a replacement in the World Title match to begin with, so I doubt putting the belt on Ryback was ever in the playing cards. WWE just decided that Ryback was insanely over and it was wise to hit while the iron was hot. I still would have had him lose to Punk as he was in the middle of his 400+ days champion run. It's just how they had Ryback's streak end because of a fixed ref spot is was pissed me off. I don't think The Big Guy has fully recovered from that still.

Ryback's lack of evolution is not really his fault. They give him nothing to do. At the time I absolutely would have given him the belt, even if the Rumble ended up being a three-way match between Rock, Punk and Ryback. Ryback could be the one The Shield killed in the darkness.

Yes.
It was the best case scenario for ending Punk's reign. A new babyface who is super over pushed to the top and gets a shot against a long reigning heel champion who's reign is running out of steam. Of course, in that scenario, there's no Rock needing the WWE title to make people care more about Twice in a Lifetime. Instead, they do that match with no title, and then you have tons of options with Ryback holding the title and the Rumble approaching.
I admit, at the time, I would not have liked it, because I'm a big Punk fan. But seeing how it all lined up in hindsight, it was absolutely the time to switch the title.

He was over like crazy, but he was not ready for the world title yet. There are ways they could have had him lose to Punk and still stay hot. Turning him heel and feeding him to Cena was not one of those ways.
