*waves* That's me. He does more dives to outside, and things like the shotgun kick into the barricade (and the stairs as seen by joe... followed by the attempted double stomp onto the steps) as well generally doing more stuff outside the ring in the paint. He also hit the brainbuster on Kevin Owens for the first time in paint mode as well as adding an extra diving double stomp off the top of the ladder when he could have won. Definitely sounds like a start, though I guess given big matches often have people break out rare spots, anyway, he could still do more to highlight the difference. he carried himself a bit differently at the last takeover too so he is still adding stuff to make it more obvious.

Book him as being a guy who simply lives outside normal society and doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks. So... Book him as Brock Lesnar?

He shouldn't be a demon. They've done that with Kane and it's been done to death. Besides, Balor is too small to be taken seriously as a frightening monster. His paint and so forth should be a means of getting him over as the next Jeff Hardy. Book him as being a guy who simply lives outside normal society and doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks. {Spoiler}(as a former goth I can make this joke, dammit.)

I have thought the same thing about Demon Balor, that there is basically scant difference between him doing that and being himself. It really reminds me of Jeff Hardy as Willow, where it was this deranged alter ego of Hardy but at the end of the day he wrestles a Jeff Hardy match.

It's too bad that he's not necessarily a young guy, I wouldn't mind him trying to find his legs in NXT for another year, ie. tweaking the Demon Prince character. But I imagine they'll want to move him up mid-next year at the latest? Hopefully not til post-Wrestlemania. Part of that is because the call-ups the last couple of years haven't really done squat, and I'm not really confident they'll properly use him.

I think he's starting to flesh out better than he was. I think it's really tough to deny that the Demon from the last Takeover was different from Balor's usual fare. He wore the paint as a means to tap into a different mindset that would allow him to fight his former friend without being stifled by his conscience and the match came off more heated than just a simple wrestling match. Earlier it did seem like it was more of an "isn't the paint cool?" kind of deal but I think it's maturing into something better. He's in a similar place as Adrian Neville was, where he's just an intensely driven, high level athlete. He comes off very believable in that role.
It was bad in the early stages where Balor would say in promos "I might even bust out the Demon for this." I don't think the story should ever be "I'll wrestle Balor, but not the Demon," but Balor coming out as the Demon should simply indicate that Finn isn't looking to have a catch as catch can wrestling match, but a straight up fight, and that's how they handled it with Joe, which is how I like it. Because at the end of the day, paint or not, Finn Balor is Finn Balor and I don't think it makes sense to hype them as different entities.

Ever since I first saw Balor, I knew he was going to be a huge star. But I can't help but feel like SOMETHING is missing. I don't know what, and I'm usually pretty good at picking those things out. But he's got a great look, a great entrance, a great presence, and he's a hell of a worker to boot. But something he needs either isn't there or simply hasn't been fleshed out or developed yet. I'm curious to see how he progresses, both in NXT and eventually on the main roster.

My 9 year old thinks Balor is the coolest edgiest guy ever and buys into the demon paint 100%. The audience for the guy may skew a tad younger than our demo. And he likes LEGO. That helps too in my stepson's eyes.

Maybe he needs to be held down by lesser talents so we can rally support for him.

Finn is the next John Cena if they play it right.
He sells a shit ton of merch to fans both young and old. At the NXT house show I was at last week the kids in Cena shirts were replaced by kids in Balor shirts and at the WWE house show I was at a month earlier the kids all got excited when Finn came out.

I think they're still learning how to film him almost, because live he did look different. His walking around the ring, he was snake like, he'd get into weird body positions after moves. Watching the special back, they missed so much. There was a point he was laying face down, and he did this awesome, almost sliding back to his feet and standing, I can't even really describe it. The cameras totally missed it, they didn't shoot his version of the Taker situp or Bray's spiderwalk.

I forget who it was, but I remember someone pointing out that he does do some spots as the Demon he doesn't usually do, but it's not a massive change. Maybe something a bit more drastic, like Kishin Liger's fighting dirtier than Jushin Liger tends to do, would be in order, but I guess he's still finding his place. That's what I want. Demon Balor should use eye gouges, fish-hook his opponent's mouth, scrape his opponent's face with his boot, etc. If you're going to claim he's demonic, then let him wrestle in a vicious manner. Make the Demon mean something. Now with that said, I'm still a huge fan of the guy, a lot of that coming from the real Fegal Devitt and not the Finn Balor character. That Network documentary they did on him made me a permanent fan of the guy. This. When he's the Demon, he should heel it up, use more strikes and use more vicious head dropping moves, high angle German Suplexes etc.

It's such a weird contrast because he's insanely generic 90% of the time, but then he does his entrance that's so over the top Jeff Hardy would tell him to cool it down.

Um...couldn't they just go with: it's a big match, he does the body paint thing to a) psych himself up and b) give it that big match feel.
Essentially it's true and that's the way I've always thought about it, not that he literally has some sort of possession going on.
To me, Finn Balor's "demon" is much more metaphorical than someone like Kane's.
Maybe that's just personal interpretation, but there's also never really been anything said to suggest an actual other-worldliness to the Demon, has there?
Edit: Sorry, just realized this probably doesn't address the OP's point so much as the "Demon should be different" argument
To the OP's argument, I can't really say that I agree, he's got a pretty unique moveset and is definitely a better in ring story teller than Crews or Corbin and I might lean towards saying he's better than Joe in that regard too, but honestly I've only seen maybe 20 of his non-NXT matches, so I'm no expert there.

I have a feeling a heel turn is in order. Him being the one who attacked Hideo to set himself up for the title would add some much needed drama to his character.

Willow would body Demon Balor. That's because of his magical umbrella and being fueled by the finest Carolinian meth.

Either it was more noticeable on that night or it's not coming across as well on camera. Perhaps they could do a match that starts as a regular match but escalates in intensity so that Finn can play up 'becoming' the demon? It might be a good way to highlight the differences and Finn would have to use body language and facials to show the change because he wouldn't be in the paint.
