I'd say that Mortal Kombat 4 was where it went down hill. I fully enjoyed 3 and ultimate 3... but 4 was just not good... transitioning into a 3d fighter was not at all a good idea. I remember Raiden sounding like Zordon in that game.

Deadly Alliance is probably the best of the first 3D era, such as it was, but yeah, it was a rough transition. I guess they sort of had to do something, since even before MK4, they were having problems like how big of a clusterf*** MK3 was. "Let's not put Scorpion in the game, for some weird-ass reason. Even though it's Ed Boon's favorite character and probably overall the most popular character outside of maybe Sub Zero."

At least when they tried this again with Shaolin Monks, it produced a solid game.

I think they kinda figured it out after DA... but there is definitely a reason there was a 5 year gap between the two of them. At least when they tried this again with Shaolin Monks, it produced a solid game. Technically, when they tried again we got Special Forces... which I haven't played but I haven't heard good things...

Yeah, I remember enjoying MK3/Ultimate MK3, but you could kind of feel that things were slipping a bit. For example, the combo system was absolutely insane, and not in a good way, and made worse by the fact that the computer could do things with it that would be physically impossible for human players to achieve. MK Trilogy seemed like a great idea, but at least on the N64, it didn't play particularly well compared to the Genesis/SNES games.
Deadly Alliance certainly wasn't bad, but I kind of equate the progression with the Sonic the Hedgehog games; the first and second ones were complete classics, and while the third was really enjoyable, you could just tell something was beginning to feel "off" a bit, which then became clearer and clearer as the franchise moved into 3D.
