You buy a big can of something in the supermarket that say "stew" on it, open the can, pour the contents into a pot or bowl, and heat them.
Edit: More seriously, mix some meat, veggies, a little broth, seasoning, and a thickener like flour or cornstarch and cook low and slow until the meat is fork tender. I recommend using a slow-cooker.

Put one large can if beef stock into a crock pot, 1/4 cop flour, take a roast and cut into cubes, cut and cube 3 potatoes, add corn baby carrots, a clove of garlic half an onion diced, one bay leaf. Cook for 8 hours on low or 5 hour on high. Season to taste. If you want a heavier sauce, mix 1/8 cop flour to half a cup of cold water. Mix well add to stew and stir until thickened.

Ditto what blackoutcreature said. The longer time you give it (without getting totally nuts), the better it'll be. In our family we'll start it early in the morning (or even chop up everything that night), and then let it cook in the slow cooker all morning long until lunch time. As for vegetables, just go with what you think would work with the meat/broth you have. Don't get exotic, nor put in anything you flat out don't like. Also, feel free to prepare them in whatever way you wish. When my dad cooks it, he puts in potatoes, but has them in HUGE pieces; like just peel and then split in half longways. I'm not saying I like them cut up into tater tot sized pieces, but half an entire potato in my stew is just ridiculous to me. Dad also likes using baby carrots, but I'd prefer mine sliced up (or just not in there, honestly).
Cook some biscuits with it too, even just supermarket "10 minutes in the oven" ones. Beef stew and biscuits are five-star on a cold/dreary day. Or at least some kind of rolls or bread.

You shouldn't stew over it too much.

I'd recommend adding a cup of red wine to the liquid for flavor.
