I'm watching the 8th season of Scrubs for the first time, since I bailed on it during season 7 the first time around. It's really good, on par with the first few seasons, even better in some ways.
What are some other shows that got bogged down but made a strong recovery?

Benidorm
The first three seasons were great, season 4 and 5 were completely dreadful but then season 6 and 7 were good.

Season 1 of Angel was good, Season 2 was okay at best, Season 3 is where it was really getting good and finding its stride, Season 4 is an absolute masterpiece for me in my opinion, and Season 5 was great too. Sincerely hope you're not saying Season 4 sucked.

The Sopranos I think fits this. Also I'd like to add Newsroom. It's first fifteen minutes is probably the most quoted thing I see on Facebook, and nothing else seemed to catch which is a shame because it ended superbly, once it toned down it's political soap-boxing and bad romances.

Buffy, too. Season 7 wasn't perfect by any means, but it was much improved over the abysmal 6th season.

30 Rock started slow, went really good in Season 2/Season 3, had a bit of a weird lull around about Season 4/Season 5, then really picked up again in Season 6/Season 7.

Six Feet Under never really got 'bad' as much as lost in its 3rd and 4th seasons. The arc of season 3, whilst novel somewhat, felt like somewhat like a contrived retread of past material as to explore complicated grief. The 4th did have one of the show's most controversial episodes that made a more stationary seasons standout, but the show did feel as though it was spinning in its place, waiting for somewhere to go. They then turned around with the gutwrenching, heartwarming spectacle that was season 5 and suddenly all was forgiven.
Justified, I'm told, deserves such a nod too. I jumped off after season 4, because it felt like they were pulling a Dexter in making the lead as invulnerable and illogically standalone rather than having any actually plan as to direction with the character. The AV Club, to name but one, have gone on to say its closing season deserves mention as the show's best, so I'll need to check that out.
One that perhaps doesn't get mentioned enough, is the closing run of Classic Doctor Who. Before its final season in '89, the 80s had not been kind to the show whatsoever. A prolonged identity crisis, a fired Doctor, and another in Davison whose only direction was 'be completely different to Tom Baker' and didn't really settle into the role until just before his exit. A complex mess that can barely be covered here. While there's a decent amount of good, the show'd resembled nothing of the juggernaut it'd once been. McCoy's first season looked to follow this downward form. The episodes were corny without redeeming aspects. Then the last season happened. The show was reinvigorated with a clear direction, returning it to the mystique of its Trotter's Lane origins. The Doctor became an intriguing character once more and Ace was a proto Rose Tyler minus the undercurrent of romantic tension. It was cancelled regardless, but it's still fun to go back and watch the Doctor Who that could have been.

Classic Doctor Who
Hartnell to Davison = Awesome (some stinkers but overall, awesome)
C Baker to McCoy's 1st season = terrible (a couple decent stories though)
McCoy's 2nd Season to Survival (final story) = Awesome

Buffy, too. Season 7 wasn't perfect by any means, but it was much improved over the abysmal 6th season. I liked season 6. Just the character developments alone made that season awesome.

Andromeda.
They tied up most loose ends after the second season, leaving nothing of interest for the third, then new arcs began afterwards and while it wasn't amazing, it ended on a satisfactory level.
Xena's last season wasn't much to write home about after the big stakes of the fifth, but the finale was damn good.

Yeah, the 9th season was pretty strong. It had a pretty similar trajectory to Scrubs in the quality department. with the 8th season being god awful. Robert California was a character with promise who was just a total buffoon, and Andy as manager did not work.

I think I bailed on that one mid-season 5, not because it was horrible but because I was just kind of tired of it. I'll have to check out the rest. When it's on, 30 Rock makes me laugh more than any show.

The funny thing was the first few episodes of the last season were awful that I gave up on the show for a few years. Also 30 Rock has one of the best finales ever.

Robert California was a character with promise who was just a total buffoon, and Andy as manager did not work. I came in the thread to post "The Office", so I guess I'll just echo all of your sentiments. When the final season initially aired a few years ago, I rolled my eyes, made dismissive wanking motions, and continued to think the show was garbage. But when I rewatched it on Netflix about a year ago, I realized that there are some hidden gems in season nine. Sure, there's a lot of muck and mire to trudge through, most notably Jim and Pam's "will they split up?" drama, but the show is actually quite funny and finds a lot of the charm that made the first four seasons so great. You have a relationship that you care about and want to see succeed (Pete and Erin), you have a villain who is going out of his way to make life hell for people (Andy), and you have characters you can relate to. I can't defend seasons six through eight, as they were rock bottom, and honestly the show should have ended when Michael Scott departed. But season nine is actually a pretty solid rebound for a series that was treading water for about three years.

It's a complete mess until Faith shows up.
