..... with Punk in the place of Roman.
Such a damn shame they didn't put the effort in with Punk at his peak in 2011 when he was cutting awesome promos and was white hot over with Crowd. The logic from the Mcmahon's POV is totally mind boggling to me.
1. Punk can work any style of match, Roman can't 2. Punk was red hot with the crowd over. Roman isn't anywhere close 3. Punk cut some of the best promos in WWE over the last 15 years back in 2011. Roman can't cut a good promo unless you give him short words and a 1-2 minute promo
They put so much creative effort into LESS talented wrestlers and give the more talented wrestlers who can do it all around, crap, senseless booking. Why wouldn't you put this type of booking effort into Punk 5 years ago?

Vince sees Roman as THE next face of the company because of his marketable look(s), and Reigns coming from the family he does helps as well, which by and large is how Vince has ultimately always decided on who should get that chance.
Punk being a main eventer and WWE champ for as long as he was shows that McMahon did think highly of him. He just never saw him as 'THE GUY' material.

Say what you want about Punk, but everything he said in that podcast seemed to ring completely true with what we see on screen.
Punk's pipebomb and leaving with the belt were the last time I heard pro wrestling mentioned in casual conversation outside of stuff like Hogan being racist and "some wrestler" dying.

Vince sees his top babyface as a tall, muscular, traditionally handsome, badass-yet-coolcat type. Yet, the average wrestler on the roster has gotten notably smaller, so the guys Vince sees in that top face role are often bigger than most of their opponents, which cuts down on the sympathy factor.
Punk was the perfect size for a top babyface in this era, but Vince likely didn't see him that way because of his lack of size. Especially once Punk actually became a main eventer, he really slimmed down and lost the bulky muscle he did have. Vince pushed Shawn Michaels hard, but HBK was a lot more muscular than Punk was late in his run, plus he had more of the classic all-American boy look.
It's another slant on how Vince is behind the times.
