Thank god he's around on Wrestling Observer Radio to call Alvarez out on his bullshit and rather markish hyperbole. Jeez, Bryan is too much sometimes. He's a necessary part of the show since he keeps things going along (god bless Dave but if it was on him, he'd be talking about the same shit all day) but he comes off like a real knob at times.

I f***ing love and have all the respect in the world for Papa Meltz. The best part of being at WM31 is that we were technically in the same crowd. I get so irritated when dumbasses shit on him for other websites twisting around his words for page hits. One of the hardest working people in the business and a living legend as far as I'm concerned.

I like Meltz and Alvarez, but for different reasons. Meltz for insight, Alvarez for humour. Meltz is at his best when he's talking about stuff he loved, Alvarez is at his best when talking about stuff he hated.

I had the honor of talking to Meltz at a PWG show and getting a picture with him. He is the living embodiment of a wrestling computer (That is, a computer just for wrestling data) and should be listed among the most respectable figures in the wrestling industry

I'll gladly praise Dave for being a passionate, knowledgeable, and thorough writer/journalist who's continued presence via the Observer has been a net overall positive in helping fans better understand the business.
But first, a 20 minute tangent on how this thread is vaguely reminiscent to a 40 year old angle from an obscure regional wrestling territory.

I actually just started subscribing to Meltzer. He is fantastic. When did he start writing the Newsletter? I know the archives have back to 1991 or so but I thought it went back further.

I could listen to the guy talk for ages, plus his sheer depth of knowledge is unrivaled. There's no one else like him and I don't think there ever will be.

Meltz also has respect for almost all wrestlers and don't shit on them. Usually. He had a weird hate boner for AJ Lee for a while before finally giving her any credit, and seemed to have zero luck predicting anything when it came to her. That said, he did eventually seem to warm up to her. Dave Meltzer's had a very interesting career. I don't know if he has the same sort of currency in today's wrestling, but it reminds me of how Foley was stunned when Meltzer first mentioned him in the Observer and how it got him much more bookings, saying that guys who call it a gossip rag and all, or say they'd love to kick Dave's ass, but that tons of people in the business read it and that some bookers would even pull the plug on entire angles if Dave didn't seem to like it. He had genuine power, even if they would have been loathe to admit as much publicly.

At least since the early 80's. There's a thread on the board where longtime subscribers have been typing out their 80's newsletters. There's some from 1984, 1987, and 1988

I've read some issues from the late 80s that people have posted up online. For a while he referred to Warrior only as 'The Anabolic Warrior'.

One of my favorite things to do is watch something on the Network and then read what Meltz said about it. He is an awesome watching companion.

Love Meltz, but god damn do I hate Alvarez. I said it in an earlier topic, Bryan Alvarez is Jim Cornette Lite.
And again, no, that is not a compliment to either.

Meltz also has respect for almost all wrestlers and doesn't shit on them. The Junkfood Dog disagrees. Meltzer doesn't respect them all, he's just grown as a journalist during his career to the point he doesn't give opinions of that kind in his writings anymore.

Dave is great. However his complete lack of Brent Kremen stories leaves him just below Bryan when it comes to the radio shows.

I also just started subscribing and I don't blame him for this week's newsletter being late. Especially with the Cena news breaking around the time the newsletter is posted. Unlike a lot of others, I like Alvarez much more when he's talking about something he loves. It's a pleasure to hear he and Vinny review old shows, summarize the angles, and explain why everything makes sense and why it is great storytelling. Plus Bryan has a greater appreciation than Dave for squash matches and other matches that serve a story or character and that every match does not need to try to be five stars.
Dave is the O.G. Funny as hell, too.
