Austin in '97. I am still confused by this. Why did Vince think Sid/Taker was a better main event than Austin/Hart? Bret even won the title on the last PPV event before Mania.
Sid/Taker was a dud, and the crowd was dead because of the Austin/Hart match.
Any more?

Duggan, Studd, Flair was in a co-main. Luger was a co-main. HBK was semi-main.

Undertaker at 23. In fact, that match came before the Melina/Ashley debacle. Rey Mysterio at 22. Cena/Trips headlined. Cena at 24. Undertaker/Edge headlined. Edge at 26. Michaels/Taker 2 headlined. Del Rio OPENED 27. Same with Sheamus at 28.

Del Rio and Sheamus friggin' opened WrestleManias after their Rumble wins. Yeah, but they are Del Rio and Sheamus.

Del Rio and Sheamus friggin' opened WrestleManias after their Rumble wins. Yeah, but they are Del Rio and Sheamus. But at the time, they weren't seen as the objects of scorn and ridicule they are now. All that happened AFTER this.

True, but my point is that there was still hope for Sheamus before that. He's never truly recovered from that WrestleMania 28 match, and it's possible he never will.

Austin in '96. I am still confused by this. Why did Vince think Sid/Taker was a better main event than Austin/Hart? Bret even won the title on the last PPV event before Mania. Sid/Taker was a dud, and the crowd was dead because of the Austin/Hart match. 1) It was '97. 2) At the time of the Rumble, the planned Mania 13 main event was Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart 2. Bret was supposed to win the #1 contender's spot at In Your House: Final Four and go on to beat Michaels for the title in the main event. Michaels had other plans.

He's never truly recovered from that WrestleMania 28 match, and it's possible he never will. He suffers from being a golden boy and everyone knowing it. Plus he has no personality besides being from Ireland and they've even let that slide.

Ric Flair in 1992....even despite being the champion at Wrestlemania 8.
I know 1993 was the first year the winner went to Wrestlemania to face the champ, but.....
Flair was good enough to win the Rumble and good enough to be champion at Wrestlemania, but not good enough to headline?
THAT'S NOT FAIR TO FLAIR.

My mistake, and they still chose to go with Sid/Taker over Austin/Hart in the end. It was a really bad choice. Taker was probably the 4th most cheered guy in the company (Austin, Bret, Shawn were all regularly more cheered). Outside of this one match, it never really even felt they wanted Taker.

Wrestlemania 10:
I guess you can sorta count Lex Luger because co-won the 1994 Royal Rumble with Bret Hart, but Luger's WWF Title match with Yokozuna was placed in the middle of Wrestlemania 10; while Bret Hart got the final show. Too bad they couldn't make it a triple-threat like they did 10 years later.
Wrestlemania 11:
Shawn Michaels win the 1995 Royal Rumble setting up Diesel vs HBK for WM11. Main event turns out to be NFL linebacker Lawrence Taylor vs Bam Bam Bigelow...
