I loved it. The satire did not go over my head, at least. Some of the action was silly, however.
I also liked seeing a whole lot of Dina Meyer. That was a treat.

Yeah, Starship Troopers is a fun movie... Great as a satire and some of that propaganda BS has come true

Godawful garbage. It's borderline criminal what this movie did to the source material. It deserves so much better.

I watched it again recently after not seeing it since it came out when I was a kid. Still holds up. Crazy to see how many people I recognize watching it now; Denise Richards, NPH, Michael Ironside, Clancy Brown, Hank Schrader from "Breaking Bad", Gary Busey's kid, Father Gabriel from "The Walking Dead".

If they did a fateful adaptation of the book, I don't think many people would like it.
It would be like doing a movie adaptation of another great sci-fi book, The Forever War. Interesting for sure, but people would be way bored by the end of the first half to even give a crap about what's coming after it.
That said, I loved this movie. Michael Ironside is just awesome.

As mentioned it's a good popcorn flick. I'm a huge fan of the book and in no way mind what they did. A true adaptation would be great for veterans or current military members but wouldn't translate well to civilians. Put the novel in a grudge match of ideological fiction vs 1984. Socialism (1984) vs Military fascism (Starship Troopers) and you have two versions of the same thing in different degrees. Honestly as anti-communist as Hienland is his work here spells out a vision of utopia whee everyone has everything they want but still acts collectively. My opinion is were the two worlds to be compared for liklihood of accuracy, Oceania would be found probable and the Terran Federation would be found as a total fiction and incompatible with the human ego (interesting BC 1984 tries to show the human ego fighting the whole of society... He loses). Hienland may have had 1984 in mind when he wrote some of the mythos behnd ST. The great wars eluded to, the fall of socialism and capitalism are examples of what I mean. Thnk about the millions of Eurasian, East Asian and Oceania veterans coming together after somehow the whole thing falls. Then banding together to form the next governments. The problem is you as a non-citizen get more stuff and freedom than in the 1984 world. That has been shown in the real world, to produce laziness rather than unity of effort. The citizens of the Terran Fed get rewarded as the party members in 1984 do but they never enjoy the stuff they have while non-citizens live worry free.. Recipe for lack of unity rather than total worldwide harmony.

Recipe for lack of unity rather than total worldwide harmony. The only thing that differentiates a citizen from civilian in Starship Troopers is that citizens can vote. They receive no other special dispensation or privileges. Now that is an interesting idea, from the ashes of the world in 1984 rose Starship Troopers. And Heinlein did write Starship Troopers in response to mounting anti-military criticisms and pro communist support in the US. He actually stopped halfway through writing Stranger in a Strange Land to write Starship Troopers. People constantly say that the movie satirizes the military, but I have yet to find anyone explain how it does that. The movie does very lightly satirize nationalism, but not to any remarkable extent.

Two things always bother me when I watch this film
1- Why they bother using infantry where aerial bombers are far more effective.
2- What an unbelievably self-centred bitch Denise Richards character is.

Ah I love this on. As a grunt my initial response default to this has been angry swear words etc etc. however I'm older now and have the more tempered response of explaining just as the novel does, that you can glass the planet and never be certain you got everybody. Further, using infantry is as personal as an individually mail letter with a punch to the nose attached. While a bombing raid is addressed to whom it may concern. The attempt of Operation Bughouse was to squash and hold Klanathu. You cannot occupy a planet with air power. The operations later wer all aimed at seizing and holding ground or seizing and removing royalty caste bugs. Again a bomber can't do this. The fly boys will always hold the single point of mass destruction records but it is got damned impressive to see what we mud feet can do with rifles and Explosives.

I remember thinking it was sad that NPH had fallen so far. Now, it's clear he embraces cheesy performances like this (and still manages to be awesome)
