I was researching some Ox Baker stuff recently after Dan Maff, on Art of Wrestling, referenced Baker as the one wrestler he was afraid of as a kid at shows (Dan's dad was a ref in the 70's and 80's). I just came across this doozy of a video:
Anyone have any good stories or videos of infamous riots and fan incidents like this from back in the day? I know Puerto Rico was particularly known for shit like this, right?
Riots and hooligans in sport have always fascinated me, especially old school stuff, so Im interested to see more from the wrestling world.

Didn't a Leon Spinks match in Japan start a riot?
Let that sink in. A riot. In Japan.
That's... not a common occurrence.

Maybe the Japanese just don't like people called Leon.

In Mexico, there was some multi-person tag match....I know Rey and Konnan (in NWO shirt) were involved. That ended in a riot.

The description seems like a booking mess, still, is amazing that this incident has such a reaction in chain that was an influence on the return of UWF and the rise of MMA. Also, why Inoki never booked on the Budokan? Baba booked there monthly, yet NJPW almost never touched the building

Hahaha, I was just looking at my notifications and the last one I had before this thread was for a post in the Riot Control Appreciation thread. I noticed it and was like "hey, wait a second...."

I don't have video, but Lawler getting his head shaved against Austin Idol damn near knocked down the Mid-South Coliseum. I remember seeing people trying to climb the cage to get at Tommy Rich, Idol & Paul E.

I remember one Mexican show that ended with fans throwing chairs into the ring, and Psicosis throwing them right back.
And here's a near-riot during a match between Carlos Colon and Abdullah the Butcher:

Not at the actual event but I was in a bar showing Wrestlemania 25 and they had forgotten to get a late license and so they shut everything off just before Taker vs HBK which started a riot in the place. Police ended up getting called out etc. It was friggin hilarious ha

While they weren't full scale riots, Freddy Blassie had a lot of stories of fans attacking him in the '50s in Los Angeles and San Bernardino. The fans could also get quite rowdy during Gorgeous George matches.

1983, Ric Flair defending the NWA World title in Dominican Republic against Jack Veneto. Veneto had Flair in a sleeper hold when the time limit expired and the bell rang. A riot that followed was actually a celebration - the fans didn't realize it was a draw and thought Veneto had just won the belt. Flair wrote that people were throwing chairs and fighting with the police. He feared of what would happen when they realized their boy didn't actually win, so he left the ring and let Veneto pose with the belt. He even didn't want to take the belt back from Veneto in the locker room when he offered it to Flair. Some time later Flair came back for a rematch with Roddy Piper as his manager and during the match as Veneto was running off the ropes Piper tripped him. Another riot exploded and the police surrounding the ring pointed their guns at Piper. Thinking quickly, Flair had Veneto pin him, though it was not the planned finish. He only got the title belt some time later and Veneto's title run was never asknowledged by the NWA.

Let me go see if it is still up. But Jamie "JC Ice" Dundee caused a "Riot" in North Mississippi at a show Rodney "Mega Man" Grimes held.
NSFW it's Jamie Dundee on a live mic. So who knows what he will say.

While they weren't full scale riots, Freddy Blassie had a lot of stories of fans attacking him in the '50s in Los Angeles and San Bernardino. The fans could also get quite rowdy during Gorgeous George matches. I recall Blassie telling stories about working shows in the segregation-era South, playing up to the black fans in the balcony to get some heat from the crowd in general. Most shows usually ended with him being followed back to wherever he was staying by rednecks in pick-up trucks with shotguns. At least one occasion Blassie made it back to his hotel after ditching them only to discover a bullet hole in his car. Of course there's the Hulk Hogan-Nick Bockwinkel AWA Super Sunday match where the fans rioted over the Dusty finish. The match supposedly convinced Hogan to leave for the WWF. Jim Cornette used to tell the story that if the San Francisco territory ever booker High Chief Peter Maivia to lose a match, that match had to go on last because the crowd would inevitably riot and they wouldn't be able to continue the show afterwards. Supposedly a young Afa and Sika were big perpetrators of these riots and Maivia decided he needed to "smarten them up" and train them to be wrestlers to stop them.

I wouldn't call it a "riot" because of its non-violent nature, but about 3 minutes into this video, absolute anarchy reigns:

I was at an indie show in Queens in 2005 and a riot broke out. It was during a Rhino versus Sabu match and Sabu did the "Someone throw me a chair" bit, and all of the sudden everyone was throwing chairs in the ring a la Funk in ECW 1994. Well it got out of hand and Sabu and Rhino made a break for it, and people started shoving each other. I don't think anyone got hurt, and I was drunk enough that I enjoyed the whole thing, especially after someone from Security tackled me for no reason and I yelled at him. He sort of ended up apologizing in the middle of this "riot". Can't even remember the name of the promotion.
