So odd to realize Pony is back already, even if I did see the new episode. But it's still good. More pony is always good. Work time. Obliga-Twi.

I won't be seeing the episode live, have an expo to attend this weekend Likewise, except I'm going to Wizard World St. Louis. I'll have to see if somebody can record it for me.

"Somepony To Watch Over Me": Hoo boy, this was a stinker this time around. Mostly because this is perhaps Applejack's worst portrayal yet, the overbearing big sister who thinks her little sis cannot even tie her horseshoes together without her watching over her. And that chase scene in the third act felt too long. A few good things (the chimera itself, Scootaloo interrupting a song) cannot save this one from a ranking at the bottom list of episodes. D+. I watched everywhere...but there was no TLML Adventure.

I don't have time to go into detail, but the Breezie spell was too overwhelming when compared to your other examples, not to mention completely extraneous as well. Every other transformation spell she tried in your first three examples were at least from one thing she's remotely familiar with to another thing remotely familiar with. She turns herself and her friends into a completely new species that she's read about and has only interacted with in person for perhaps a couple of hours on the first try without even considering the possibilities of what she could do physically and physiologically to them (think "transporter accidents") Turning into something new? Hitting a new spell on the first try? Not considering what she could do to them? Why does this sound familiar...oh right: And again something that nopony batted an eye at when that happened.

In the case of the spell on Rarity, it was adding on something (Butterfly, known) to a pony that had the happy coincidence of giving her pegasus-related powers. That makes sense. It's still not as extensive as the breezie transformations, which seems eve more superfluous since I don't recall much in the way of merch relating to it.

Even if we accept that this spell was related to something known (butterfly), the other two points still remain that this was a spell Twilight just did for the first time after looking at it for a few seconds and where she apparently had little concern what that might do physically or psychologically to her friend...which are two points brought forward against the breezie spell.
So, either both spells are problematic or none of them are.

So, either both spells are problematic or none of them are. It's well established that Twilight picks up spells quickly - she either gets them 100% right or 100% wrong on the first try. In this case only one of her friends is involved and not all five of the others, so that if the spell DID go wrong, it would be a lot easier to fix and could potentially decide of anypony else wanted the spell. In the case of the Breezie spell, we're talking an ALIEN physiology. Pony and Butterfly physiology is better known, researched and understood and thus would be easier to alter/blend/combine/reverse.

So, its A-OK to use only one friend as test subject instead of five even though the one might actually be equally screwed if things do not turn out right? Interesting train of thought.
And suddenly I am asking myself...where does the idea that the Breezies are some mythical creatures that Fluttershy just happened to find for the very first time come from? The Equestrian Society for the Preservation of Rare Creatures knows about them, so there must be some research books written on them. And if we can swallow the idea that Twilight knew how to put an Ursa Minor to sleep although having only read up on them a few minutes previous, who's to say that she did not become interested after Fluttershy's visit in "Three's A Crowd" and did some research reading on them before their visit? Would that be that out of character for Twilight?
