General consensus around here is that the only way to save Roman's career is to turn him heel. Hey, it worked wonders for The Rock, it worked wonders for The New Day, it's worked for quite a lot of guys whose face shtick was bombing/growing stale.
But let's say that Vince actually goes for it. Let's say Roman wins the title and then turns heel, or vice versa. What sort of heel can they turn him into after three whole years of Making Roman Look StrongTM?
Surely they wouldn't be stupid enough to make him into a chicken-shit who forgets how to win without tons of interference and constantly whines about having to defend his title. The guy can count his singles match loses on one hand, so turning him into Seth Rollins 2.0 or even Authority-era Randy Orton would not only be stupid, it'd be downright unbelieveable.
A Kevin Owens style of heel who talks a big game, can win without cheating but still runs away when he doesn't have the advantage seems a little more favorable. I could certainly hear him pulling off the classic heel lines like "I'm not fighting you tonight, we fight on my terms!", but actually bailing out and fleeing when a face gains the upper hand on him would still feel really weird after three whole years of Looking Strong, you know? Hell, even when he was a heel in the Shield I can't remember the three of them backing down from fights very often (usually because they won those fights).
And unfortunately, despite what Vince might have us believe, he doesn't really have the size or the aura to be a monster heel like Brock Lesnar. I mean, he could go out there and just kick the shit out of everyone he steps in the ring with, but since they absolutely refuse to let him be a silent badass, that means he's probably going to be talking every week, which is going to affect that killer aura.
Personally, I think something like a Reign (lol) of Terror era Triple H mixed with a bit of Douche-tista would suit him best, as both of those seem to fit well with his personality and booking, but that too would require starting shows off with a fifteen minute promo, which is about thirteen and a half minutes longer than Roman should ever hold a microphone.
Another thing to consider is who would he be feuding with? I figure that Ambrose and Lesnar would be a given, and I guess you could cruise through a month or two with The Local Men or Mark Henry (though I can't imagine anyone getting terribly excited for those), but who else is there? Cena's still out. Orton's out. Cesaro's out. Sting and Bryan are out for good. Who else is there that's at that upper/main event level? AJ, maybe? New Day, possibly?
And all of that aside, I have to be perfectly honest here: after everything the company has done to him, I'm not sure that even a heel turn can save him anymore. The crowds are so dead-set on opposing him out of pure spite that I think they would see right through the ruse of turning him heel in order to make him a more popular face in the future and still refuse to give him the benefit of the doubt.
So yeah, what's really the best option, the most favorable outcome of a Roman Reigns heel turn? And will it even matter when and if it happens?
