Final score for the Gauntlet of Fire is... 7.5/10. The writers finally remembered that Spike works when he helps not when he's the constant butt of the joke. Solid character episode with some good visuals and world building to boot, serving as an effective sequel to Dragon Quest. Loses some points as a few of the beats about Dragons and friendship felt a little similar to Lost Treasure of Griffonstone at points, Ember's turnaround feeling a little too quick, and an ending we all saw coming. Actually, I liked how Ember "turned around" - I just think the angle should have been further in defiance of her father (the whole reason she was doing this) than just listening to Spike. The fact that she didn't attack Rarity and Twilight on sight at least suggests she was open to the idea. I just wish we could have had more dragon interaction because yeah, it was like Griffonstone with war instead of money. And yes, BRIAN BLESSED TORCH needs to come back sooner than later! |
