I think a big reason for Shadows of the Empire's popularity was because it was the first major multimedia project Star Wars did. Book, comic, toys, the video game, all being released at around the same time. I don't think it would've been as big a deal without the N64 game. I remember it being a huge hit.

I'd love to see a "Shadows" movie, Even in animated form.

Star Wars had been out of the mainstream eye for quite some time too. I'd say it's popularity was almost at its lowest. So it was good that a great game was launched on a new platform. The snowspeeder stage did wonders for the franchise to non-hardcore fans. Everyone loved it.

What I appreciated was that each medium told the same story from a different viewpoint. The game followed Dash, the novel followed Luke, Leia and Vader, and the comic filled in the gaps with Xizor and Guri. Xizor himself was a fairly stock villain, but it was refreshing to see a story that wasn't just Empire vs. Rebellion. Throwing in the Black Sun and a villain who was actively trying to f*** over both sides of the Galactic Civil War for his own profit added a nice layer to the proceedings. The soundtrack was excellent, too.

And that is absolutely true. The Thrawn trilogy was a stepping stone for the franchise, and it absolutely blew up into a media crossover with Shadows. I just maintain that I personally didn't think the book was that good. Does Disney recognize the special editions of the trilogy? If so, then at least the Outrider is canon, as it was seen in Mos Eisley.

I'd say if Shadows was never as succesfull as it was, we'd never have the Special Edition rereleases a year later.

They do. Disney's official canon from the pre-Disney era is Episodes I-III, Episodes IV-VI Special Editions, The Clone Wars movie, Clone Wars TV shows, and Rebels. "Legends" Don't care I still reread the Wraith Squadron novels religiously. My favorite books from that era, easily.

Even if the Outrider's cameo wasn't canon, they reintroduced its ship class, the Corellian YT-2400 light freighter, in an episode of Rebels.

Wonder if we will ever see Mara Jade in the new canon maybe in the reboot of the new canon coming in 2022 but seriously if they were going to include anyone from the old EU I would have thought it would have been her. Who knows what Episodes VIII and IX hold. I'm sure Jennifer Lawrence needs the work

Early reactions are insanely good...apparently it's incredibly emotional and surprisingly funny.

Also we need an update on the Ewoks I'm surprised that aspect of Star Wars never made a comeback. I have fond memories of the two tv movies.
