Watching the hype for WMXII, Bret claimed that Shawn Michaels was based around the "Mexican style" of wrestling but "I dont know any really tough Mexican wrestlers". He made another comment where he said he respected Jose Lothario (no jokes please) but not the "Mexican style of wrestling". What did Bret have against lucha? Especially since Bret was a babyface at this time, so it made Bret look like a jerk.

That's somewhat humorous, because the popular story is that Konnan is the person who taught Bret the Sharpshooter.

He's upset that no one will tell the real story of how it was the hart family that fought at the Alamo.

Bret came from Calgary where wrestling was all about tough guys proving how tough they were. Much like Minneapolis and the AWA. So any wrestling that revolved around the characters or acrobatics more then being tough wasn't going to get over with him. It's why he didn't think Memphis was worthy as well.

Traditional old-school Lucha could look very very weird to American (or Canadian) wrestling fans who weren't used to the way Lucha ring psychology and in-ring storytelling worked. A lot of seemingly pointless acrobatics and contrived spots. A lot has changed over the decades as Lucha has become more Americanized and more gymnastic-oriented/high flying styles have become much more common north of the border, but at the time I could see someone like Bret not thinking too highly of it.

Of course, I don't know if Bret has ever denied it, but I want to say the Scorpion Hold was more a thing in Japan and Mexico than US/Canada at the time.

I'm semi joking, but semi serious. It's most likely simply that it wasn't Bret Hart. If it was Bret Hart Bret Hart was talking about he'd mark like Bret Hart meeting Bret Hart at a Bret Hart convention.

Which is ironic since Stampede brought in several Japanese and Mexican workers, in fact, it was said on the Owen DVD that Owen's style was influenced by them.

But he was working mildly heelish in the program to help get Shawn over as *the* guy. So I think what he said on Raw was part of it. Now in his book he went on to talk about his philosophy of what wrestling is and that's where my info from my original answer came. But on Raw I think it was much more about the angle.

Bret once did a tour in a Mexican promotion, and during the entire run, not one single talent walked up to him with tears on their eyes and mentioned how good he was.
Hart's been wary of them ever since.

Bret was totally in the WWF bubble (for example: he hadn't seen Ric Flair in action until Flair joined WWF in 1991). He only knew Stampede & WWF style. Everything else? Not pro wrestling. Inferior.
He finally saw that "flippy Mexican stuff" when he joined WCW...and ended up calling the luchadores the best workers in the company.
To be fair to Bret, the cruiserweights in WCW later that same year (1996) opened a lot of eyes. I imagine Bret's opinion mirroring that of a lot of American promoters' back then.

He says something similar in his go-home promo before Survivor Series 97 too. That when Joe Shitbag comes home from a long day at work and sits down with a beer to watch TV, he wants to watch a MAN like Bret kick some ass and not some wuss like Shawn doing that flippy Mexican stuff.
