Inspired by my latest top ten video (shameless self promotion over) what in your opinion is the biggest example of a sportsperson who has squandered an easy win within sight of the finishing line?

The one that comes to my mind recently is the Leafs/Bruins game 7. 2 goal lead with under 2 minutes left, and you blow it. Gary Andersen also comes to mind.

The Cubs vs. The Mets from last year's NLCS rings a bell. Literally undefeated against them all of last regular season, then they f***ing swept us when it counted.

The Cubs vs. The Mets from last year's NLCS rings a bell. Literally undefeated against them all of last regular season, then they f***ing swept us when it counted. The Cubs were really young last year, though. The Mets got hot at the right time, and had (have) an incredible pitching staff. The Mets were the better team in October. The Cubs averaged 2 runs a game that series, so they would have needed insane pitching against Murphy, Ces, etc and they didn't really have that.

In no particular order: - The Patriots defense in SB42
- Peyton Manning in SB44
- Cundiff going Wide Left in the 2011 AFC Title Game
- Malcolm Butler's pick in SB49

Pats defense played pretty well in SB42. Their offense is the one who didn't show up. 14 points from a record breaking offense? Samuel dropped an INT, but it was a quite high pass and DBs drop easier picks all the time. They aren't a choke at all. If not for Tyree making an impossible play, they probably win that game.

The Buffalo Bills going to four straight super bowls and losing all four

Memphis' choke job against KU in the 2008 National Championship Game is up there. They had a 9 point lead with 2 minutes left, and proceeded to miss 4 out of 5 free throws (their poor free throw shooting all season is why I didn't put them in the Final Four), and didn't foul Mario Chalmers when they were up 3 allowing him to hit the game tying shot. The Buffalo Bills going to four straight super bowls and losing all four I can't call them chokers. No other team has went to 4.

Any NBA team that blows a 3-1 series lead. Compared to the NHL, it's much MUCH harder to come back from such a deficit.

The first loss where Scott Norwood missed the easy field goal, though- that has to be considered a choke job, though. (At least for the other three- especially the Cowboys ones, the Bills weren't particularly close to winning it.)

(At least for the other three- especially the Cowboys ones, the Bills weren't particularly close to winning it.) To be fair to Norwood, he's only one-for-five throughout his career (which became one-for-six after Wide Right) when it comes to 40-plus yard field goals on grass fields, at a time when the success rate was only half.

Agree with most of those in the video, no matter how many times I see Jimmy White miss that black it still makes me sad.
Others I'd suggest would be Newcastle United blowing a 12 point lead in the 95-96 Premier League and South Africa's meltdown against Australia in the Semi Final of the 1999 Cricket World Cup.

The Boston Red Sox in 2011. We had a one run lead going into the ninth against the Orioles and the Yankees had a seven run lead with six outs left against the Rays. And later that night - in the span of what seemed like five seconds - we had lost and the Rays had won and we were out of the playoffs. And that does not even cover us losing our AL East lead and massive wild card lead we had at the beginning of September.
