Well.... ...answered your own question. You are absolutely right, I rented the set after my mom pulled out a picture of me wearing that Val Venis shirt with the sperm lettering. I had a kid last year and I would never let my 15 year old wear some shit like that. Teenage me went to school wearing a DX shirt that read in giant letters " Suck It" and a arrow pointing to my No No Spot.I miss the 90's.

I was in my 20's for the bulk of the attitude era & even though, as you said in your original post, a lot of it was amazing (and should very much be remembered as such)....but my god there may well have been more terrible/bad/ridiculous/absurd stuff than good. And, while I recognized a lot of that at the time....with the power of hindsight and time I REALLY see that now.

All the bad stuff, of that era, is offset by the copious amounts of Steve Blackman. YOU BETCHER ASS IT IS!

Watching the documentary disc two things that really stuck out to me was Road Dogg talking about parents bringing their 4 year olds up to him to showing him how "cool" it was that their kid could do the crotch chop and say suck it and that at one point Shawn was in the ring in his boxers very clearly jiggling his balls. That would never go down now. I guess it made me really see how different the mindset of people were in the 90's.

The best year of the Attitude era was 2000, they moved away from all the bad stuff and focused on the better elements of it. In fact it's probably the best year in WWF/E history, the television in every aspect was lightyears ahead of where its at now. Episodes of Raw and Smackdown can be watched standalone, they'd have a storyline that was specific to that episode that actually progressed in the way that something on a drama show would do that then tied in to the larger story.
It felt like a TV show with different locations and stuff, whereas now it's just a bunch of basic shit that happens in the ring and then loads of shots of people having conversations stood sideways in the same room with a curtain behind them.
They also had a stellar roster that year. The matches were the right length, whereas now they're too long and in the attitude eras worse part they were too short.
The comedy was at its best too, Edge and Christian and Kurt Angle are just 3 of many standouts (the first ones that come to my head) It still holds up today, whereas late 98/early 99 are f***ing awful.
Early 98 is still quite decent as well.
Come to think of it it's telling that the year after Russo left is the best year and the part of 98 where it seems like he had less freedom to do some of his stupid shit was the better part of the year

A lot of the Attitude Era was very cringe worthy.
I'd love to see those who constantly complain and moan about wanting it back, actually get it back for a night, but it's some of the worst stuff. The Wyatts impregnate Lana, Sami Zayn feeds Kevin Owens shit, Sasha and Becky fighting over Ric Flair and calling each other sluts, Renee Young as Women's Champion.

Better than the snoozefest we get now. Look at how amazingly stacked their roster is, yet they completely miss out on writing gripping stories for them. At least back then they had storylines we still talk about today.

Then he went to WCW and we got David Arquette as the WCW champion. Then he went to TNA and he turned them to shit too.

Just as an example in the Michael Cole thread a lot of people talked about how good Cole is capable of being when Vince isn't micro-managing everything that comes out of his mouth. I don't at this point you can lay the blame solely on the writers or even the performers. a lot of this is Vince's fault always thinking he knows better then everyone else.

It would be World War 3...this is why WWE would never in a million years go back to the Attitude Era type of show. They'd drown in complaints.

I agree he should just let his writers breathe a bit and have some creativity.

Because it was entertaining, had unique and charismatic characters, and week-to-week storyline development.
Things that today's product sorely lack.

While there were certainly things that weren't good at the time, the Attitude Era is a great visual example of how you could actually do things on TV without someone getting upset by it. Nowadays, you do anything that remotely upsets or offends someone and you'll have people on social media calling for a boycott or demanding an apology.

I was 10 years old in 98 and needless to say, my parents weren't thrilled with much of the content. I even remember my parents trying to ban me from watching in 99, with the solace of "Well, you can still watch WCW", to which my response was, "But WCW sucks now!"
But I'll second 2000 being not just the best year of the AE, but the best year in WWE history. Good writing, captivating TV, and everything and everyone actually felt important.

Half of it was good, half of it was bad. Pretty much, it's not like Mae Young's hand baby and PMS were the parts drawing ratings, everyone knew that stuff was terrible even back then. It's just the stuff at the top was fresh, exciting, you had to see it because you had no idea what would happen. They may have gone a bit too far sometimes, but that's the risk you take. An 8 year old isn't going to know what "Suck It" actually means, it's just something those cool guys on TV say.

I'll be honest, I loved the good stuff but even as a kid a lot of that stuff made me cringe.

There was some dumb shit but seeing the rock, Austin, Foley and undertaker at the top of their game made for an incredible time to be a wrestling fan. Just not a great time to be a women's wrestling fan.
