only two things will survive the apocalypse, twinkies and terry funk. I now want a post-apocalyptic film starring Terry Funk and a box of Twinkies. that's not going to be a film, more an eventuality

Can he even realistically do any spots at his age?

I'm more surprised it took him this long into 2016 to be main eventing a match. He will never retire!!!
Let's be honest though, Flair would be doing the same thing if it wasn't for Vince paying him not to wrestle.

Ok I count 5 Terry Funk retirements, there could be more. 1. Mid 80s in japan, after a tag match with Dory. 2.1997 in amarillo after a match with Bret Hart. 3. 1998 after a tag match with Bradshaw. 4. 2005 after ecw reunion show. 5. 2012 after a tag match with Dreamer. Actually 6...he had a "retirement" match last year against Jerry Lawler.

Sad that he needs the money THAT bad. I wonder how destitute he is Terry Funk is quite well off, has a nice home life, and is happy, last time I checked. He just really, really, really loves wrestling. And hey, the fact that he can still go at all, let alone well enough to entertain people at his age, is incredible to me. More power to him. For my money he's probably the North American GOAT and is still at it.

For my money he's probably the North American GOAT and is still at it. With a THA INTERNETS search, it puts his estimated net worth at $1 Million. A lot of people could live comfortably off that type of money, and I pretty much always assumed he continued to wrestle because he *wanted* to, not because he *needed* to as well. I believe he made a living on the side for a while doing fight choreography for movies, but I don't know much about that and could be mistaken or overstating. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Dreamer was on a Podcast at some point late last year(AOW?) and mentioned Funk doing a House of Hardcore match. The host asked similar questions as have been posed here and, regarding Funk's knees, Dreamer said that he recently had double knee-replacement surgery and was feeling better than ever as far as that goes.

Terry's knees must creak like the Tin Man by now. 'Will I be able to get around comfortably?' 'You shouldn't be able to get around comfortably NOW.'

Terry's knees must creak like the Tin Man by now. 'Will I be able to get around comfortably?' 'You shouldn't be able to get around comfortably NOW.' That doc has probably spent the last 20 years sitting around in a daze, holding the MRI of Terry's knees, muttering "How? HOW?" to himself.

Actually 6...he had a "retirement" match last year against Jerry Lawler. I wouldn't call that a retirement, it was just the last time Funk & Lawler would face each other in a singles match, hence why it was called "The Last Stand". (The entire card was in tribute to Lance Russell, who grew up in the town they wrestled in: Jackson, TN.) I heard Terry himself joke about his "retirements". What he usually means is "it's just the last time I'll wrestle in that arena". So, it's like having 100s of retirements on live events before having the big one on PPV.

Poor Terry Funk's wife saying that she had wanted for Terry to retire in 1990, and his daughters saying that they believed his dad when he said that he wanted to retire for good in 97... Those knees, like how did he walked around even back then? Did funk got that new knee? If he did then I can see him still wrestling, but if he didn't and its the same one from 97, then he's a crazy f***er.

I remember Foley described Funk's knees as looking like someone "drew them on. They certainly didn't look human".
Mutoh and Funk are why I hate seeing Al Snow, Christopher Daniels, or Super Crazy doing multiple moonsaults in a match, it's not worth it.

I remember watching Beyond The Mat with a commentary track including Funk. When it got to the retirement match, the other guy (Blaustein?) cracks a joke, and Funk says something like:
"Well, now, I was serious. I meant for that to be my last match. But, dadgum it, they called me from Japan and made a hell of an offer. So I figured I'd just wrestle in Japan and that would be my last match in the States. But then WCW called and made an offer I'd have been a damn fool to turn down, so dadgum it, I came back and decided it would be my last match in Texas. But they wanted me to work some of the house shows to try to boost the gate. So it's my last match in Amarillo."
(Blaustein laughs)
"Hey, I'm serious. That's it. I'm not going to wrestle in Amarillo again"
Shortly after WCW closed, Funk wrestled Greg Valentine on an XWF show in Amarillo.
