Who even appears on Around the Horn now? Woody Paige, Tim Cowlishaw, Bob Ryan, Sarah Spain, Frank Isola, JA Adande, Jackie MacMullin, Kate Fagan, Ramona Shelbourne, Israel Gutierrez, Pablo Torre, Kevin Blackistone, Bomani Jones, and Mina Kimes are the ones I see most often.

Woody is not only still doing the show, he's on all the time. Probably the most regular of the panelists.
Bill Plaschke is also on a lot out of the names not mentioned.

Again, why aren't the people who decided to over pay for the rights to games getting the axe? When they were signed I don't think they saw cable eroding this quickly. Like the new NBA contract signed a couple of years ago starts this fall. As for the NFL contract it's not just for Monday Night Football but for use of NFL footage on other shows. The NFL can be very picky about these things. But it doesn't help that they're now really pushing Thursday Night games (ie the majority are shown on broadcast tv, they're touting watching it through legal online means). FS1 doesn't get flack for being in a similar position because ESPN is king. Like Burger King could get away with stuff simply because they're not McDonald's.

Let's just be honest here for a few moments. ESPN is losing money for a variety of reasons, cord cutting and bad deals that have been pointed out is a big problem but they have another problem too.
The vast majority of people that are willing to spend a lot of time watching a station like ESPN for things other than games are frankly in the 30-65 age range, white and middle class. People like my dad for example, my dad has been so totally turned off by ESPN that he stopped watching it and he's not a cord cutter. Young people are cord cutters so what is ESPN doing? They are alienating the older consumers that still have cable.
I'm sorry to tell them this trying to appeal to a younger generation of people that either don't have time or the desire to sit and watch your product isn't going to help you. The few times a year I see my dad and we have this convo the first thing he says to me is "I gave up on that station when they decided idiots like Stephen A Smith and people like him were the way to go." Also why do they just not show highlights anymore? I use to flip it on in the morning to see what I missed, now all I get is talking heads talking about shit I don't care about.
I think in short ESPN killed itself with a couple of philosophies which did nothing but make the fan base that is their core not want to watch their station. First one being this "debate everything" mindset, dudes screaming on tv is not entertaining.
2nd. ESPN deciding that being political was a good idea. They constantly talk about shit that has nothing to do with sports. I watch sports to escape reality not constantly be hit with stories about race/feminism etc etc. They really make no bones about pushing a pretty heavy liberal stance and hey if they're liberal that's cool but I don't want politics in my sports.
3. They completely alienate about 80% of the country with the way they cover sports. Unless you are a fan of one of a handful of teams they pretty much will never mention your team. It's a joke.

ESPN not the only ones doing cuts. Seth Davis is out at SI SI will soon end up like Life Magazine. They will get by just creating special editions of whatever.

the reasons for the down fall
1) ESPN's big market bias
2) drastically over paying for the rights to games
3) cord cutting
4) acting like racing and hockey don't matter - they've never been my thing but they are sports
5) refusing to alter their marketing strategy in is digital age
anyone else have anything to add to this?

Oh man, that's awful. I can't say I remember that particular SC episode but a miscarriage is traumatic enough. Having one on live television without anyone realizing makes it even worse. the reasons for the down fall 1) ESPN's big market bias 2) drastically over paying for the rights to games 3) cord cutting 4) acting like racing and hockey don't matter - they've never been my thing but they are sports 5) refusing to alter their marketing strategy in is digital age anyone else have anything to add to this? I'd bump #1 down to #5 but that sounds about right otherwise. I think the whole "big market only" thing is only really an issue for baseball. And I'm not entirely sure how much control they have over what games they get there versus what MLB wants to give them. But it's certainly not the case for the NFL and especially not the NBA. Yeah, there is an east coast bias, but I don't think it's as detrimental to their overall coverage as people suggest. They just go where the biggest stories are. And they do over-saturate on those big stories. But they're also not exclusive to the biggest markets. And they're certainly more balanced in their coverage than NBCSN is in hockey with the "Bettman Seven."

I don't know if it counts as a firing since both will remain on the Network with different shows, but Mike Golic officially announced that he will be doing Mike and Mike permanently with Trey Wingo and Mike Golic Jr. starting next year. Not sure what Other Mike will be doin.

Not sure what Other Mike will be doin. Greenberg is doing his own show from like 7-10. I wish ESPN would do a trial run with this, because if it fails miserably either they stick through it or it gets canned. Then what do they do with Greenberg?

Especially since in my opinion, the meat of the people are sticking with Golic and Golic Jr. (And if Wingo has to be there), while Greenberg is apparently on his own? Yeah not really sure how this is gonna pan out. Not sure why Mike and Mike even needs to be broke, but ESPN's a giant crack right now so... might as well!

Greeny's making like $7 mil a year, so I'm guessing ESPN execs want more bang for their buck. It really all comes down to them trying to justify his contract.

This may sound strange for a guy whose job it is to talk, but Wingo just talks WAY too much. He can't let a second go by without saying something.

I am not hyped about Greenberg getting his own talk show essentially since he's very bland and even less hyped about Wingo/Golic when I think the two golics can work just fine on their own. You are moving them to ESPNU anyway so why not let father and son have their fun
I am hyped for whatever they are doing with Bomani/Torre at 12. Seems like it shall be fun. I was hoping they do something more with Torre and him and Bomani seems to be a good step in the right direction. I wonder if they use Stugotz permanently in Bomani spot for Highly Questionable.

He always has to crack a joke or give some "insider knowledge". He doesn't let shit breath which can be frustrating when you hear someone like Teddy or Clark talk and Trey jumps in before they finish their point.

I wonder how betrayed Golic feels since he did not find out about Greeny doing the show until rumors circulated out
