Rankings. I'll make comments later. Overall, I found it to be the best Round so far.
1. Bee Gees - New York Mining Disaster 1941 2. Big Star - Holocaust 3. Radiohead - How To Disappear Completely 4. Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart 5. Queens of The Stone Age - I Appear Missing 6. Sufjan Stevens - No Shade in The Shadow of The Cross 7. Buika - No habrá nadie en el mundo 8. Our Lady Peace - Superman's Dead 9. Soul Asylum - Misery 10. Black Label Society - In This River 11. Pat 'The Bunny' Schneeweis - I'm Not a Good Person 12. Stromae - Formidable 13. Daughter Darling - Shattered 14. Randy Travis - Diggin Up Bones 15. Shinedown - Save Me
1. Bee Gees - New York Mining Disaster 1941 It's fascinating to hear a band famous for a specific sound, indeed a sound they did much to innovate, utilize a different sound, a different style, early in their career. The Bee Gees have a rich, poignant sound here and the palpable emotion is what sends this song over the edge for me. It deals with an enormous theme, life and death coupled with the sense of isolation that being trapped would bring to a person, that is also applied to romance. The feeling of melancholy takes you back when you think of the Bee Gees. To me, I ranked this song number one not only because of the sound and the ambition behind the performance, but also because of who was performing it. In terms of music, the vocals are spare and sad, poignant and combine well with a pounding rhythm section and melancholy guitar. The story-telling is profound as well and fits the Round theme to a tee.
2. Big Star- Holocaust Big Star embodied much of the standards of pop music when they first debuted. They were superb at writing songs that spoke to the teenager in everyone, playful and with a infectious energy. This song, made when the band was going through personnel, demonstrates that they could also play music in a different register with equal power. The creeping pace, the dejected vocals coupled with bare lyrics, the haunting guitar and piano work: this song sets the blue print for innumerable future bands, including Radiohead. The moment where the song talks about a mother's death and the strings increasing in sullen intensity truly embodies what this Round was about. "Everybody goes, even those who fall behind" is such a bleak, yet impressive line and the pain in Alex Chilton voice when he says "holocaust" is unnerving.

Huh, who would have guessed that picking a song by a Belgian electronic pop star would have not played very well in this competition? BTW< dead last in the last two rounds... that's impressive. I understand your frustration, but that logic can be used for a few of the songs last round. I ranked the Bee Gees song number one and that could have been a song where judges said "Eh, it's the Bee Gees." and ranked it last just for that. The Big Star pick was not safe at all either. Understanding that they were a feel-good pop group known for songs like the one that would go on to be the theme song for That 70's Show throws "Holocaust" into stark relief. It's a track that was also produced by a band that would soon change members and one that had a big influence on subsequent music. I thought it was fantastic, but my ranking wasn't enough to keep the person who picked it out of the sing-off. I can't promise you that you'll move on or that you won't find yourself at the bottom again, but honestly, I'm trying to get a feel for your music selection this Season. It's, in a way, a bit different than what I've seen from you in the past. That doesn't make it good or bad, just different. It took me three Seasons of playing to get out of the fourth Round (and I still was almost eliminated last Season with only 3 Rounds in) and I was eliminated twice, back to back in Season VII, so I can understand a bit of your frustration. I just simply think that other songs were better for the Round. They did more musically, they were more pleasing to me, they fit the theme well, etc. It's an inherently tough game and everyone involved in this has played before. It's probably the most experienced group of players we've had in Idol, so I honestly don't know who's favored or not, especially after only three Rounds. I've had a different player send in my favorite song each Round and I think that diversity will continue as the game plays out.

Sure, "Higher" was kind of a joke pick because it hadn't been used before. Stromae is an artist I really respect and I say that without being able to speak French. The music he crafts allows you to feel something about it without knowing what's being said and then when you read the lyrics in English you kinda get it. Plus, and I know this shouldn't count for anything, but his commitment to his performance is legendary, almost Kaufman-esque with how he's willing to stay in a character he has decided to go into.

Well I guess it's up to me to talk about round 3 rankings. 1. Pat 'The Bunny' Schneeweis - I'm Not a Good Person 2. Buika - No habrá nadie en el mundo 3. Shinedown - Save Me 4. Our Lady Peace - Superman's Dead 5. Soul Asylum - Misery 6. Randy Travis - Diggin Up Bones 7. Bee Gees - New York Mining Disaster 1941 8. Daughter Darling - Shattered 9. Queens of The Stone Age - I Appear Missing 10. Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart 11. Radiohead - How To Disappear Completely 12. Sufjan Stevens - No Shade in The Shadow of The Cross 13. Black Label Society - In This River 14. Stromae - Formidable 15. Big Star - Holocaust 1. Pat 'The Bunny' Schneeweis - I'm Not a Good Person Feeling my way through the darkness... sorry, wrong song. I enjoyed this song a great deal, it was funny to me, it almost sounds like a stand up comedian wrote and performed this. Only thing is, maybe it wasn't as fitting in the sad song theme as other songs. I think it would've fit better if he gave a couple more examples as to why he is not a good person. But I liked this song, so whatever. 2. Buika - No habrá nadie en el mundo Crackpop theory, did you choose a non-english song so that the words wouldn't make the judges depressed if they didn't know the language? Much like that '99 Luftballoons' song? (Coincidentally, after Google translating the words, I think the songs about apocalypse/armageddon.) But yeah, the guitar sound is really good. 3. Shinedown - Save Me I know a lot of people dislike 2000s rock and roll, especially the angsty, screamy stuff, but I thought this song rocked. (pun intended) 4. Our Lady Peace - Superman's Dead This song rocks too. Good 1990s alt goodness. I remember it when it first came out and I liked it back then too. 5. Soul Asylum - Misery More 90s alternative goodness. And, I REALLY shouldn't be using this in my ranking criteria, but this reminds me of the Weird Al parody of this song, which I had enjoyed for years before I ever even heard the original. But the original is still good on it's own. 6. Randy Travis - Diggin Up Bones I think this stood out in a good way because it's the only country song so far this season. So it stands out with the classic country sound. 7. Bee Gees - New York Mining Disaster 1941 Bee Gees have good voices. 8. Daughter Darling - Shattered Really good voice. 9. Queens of The Stone Age - I Appear Missing Nice rock song. 10. Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart Pretty in pink... sorry. This is a group and a song that I hear about many times, although I haven't really heard this actual song too many times. It's ok. 11. Radiohead - How To Disappear Completely It's a good song in an atmospheric sense. 12. Sufjan Stevens - No Shade in The Shadow of The Cross It's an ok song in an atmospheric sense. 13. Black Label Society - In This River I feel this might've been way better if there was a more prominent guitar sound. And maybe they did achieve what they were 'going for' in composing this song, but it wasn't very interesting sounding. 14. Stromae - Formidable Unfortunately the foreign language route didn't really work for you, mainly since I didn't like the guys singing, and the melody didn't really get much of a hook to it. 15. Big Star - Holocaust This was just a whole bunch of nothing.

Did you just save my life? I think you just saved my life. I know there's a joke in there about The Fray or Grey's Anatomy or something. But damned if I can find it.

Had you on a Joy Division read, so I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't you. Might just be my favorite band ever, but I try to keep that separate here. Now, if someone used "Incubation" or something from "Closer", I might have had to bump that to number 1.

Update? I figure that at least a few sing-off contestants have their songs in at this time.
I understand being busy and all, but weekends are a great time to get a game like this on the move. I have a wedding to go to later today, so I'll be busy later. I can work on the sing-off songs tonight though, but I'd like to have some sort of sense of where we are at.
I also recommend that Cage announce the next Round's theme. It gives the players time to think during a time when they are least likely to be busy.

13. Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart just know that every comment after "Diggin Up Bones" could be summed up as "it's okay but not great". This one's pretty interesting actually. I really liked the melody but the vocals ruined it for me. I'm guessing the idea was that the singer was supposed to sound disillusioned, but he instead he just sounded bored to me, like he was phoning it in during a song he didn't like, anxiously waiting for the one he actually wants to sing. This is why I ranked it so low, it felt worse to have a song that I felt had potential be wasted then if it was just boring.

Question about the Sing-Off. Do you want us to judge by voting for the one song that we liked the best or do you want us to rank them?

Question about the Sing-Off. Do you want us to judge by voting for the one song that we liked the best or do you want us to rank them? I knew i forgot something Rank them. First place is song you want to save. Second is a Meh song. Third place basically chooses a loser.
