Can't shake the feeling that there's an auto-elimination in the air. Basically I have a plan in place to give every potential singoff opponent a free gift certificate to Subway.Once they use it they will get food poisining and not be able to send an entry for a few days. The main flaw in that plan is that relies on people actually wanting to go eat at Subway's.

Happy birthday year to me. Also, for those unaware, Prince wanted his songs wiped from the internet, so they're not on iTunes or streaming sites and YT will take it down. You could try DailyMotion if you can handle all the advertisements wreaking havoc on the screen, or hopefully every judge is already familiar with "When Doves Cry" because it is a very well known song. EDIT: Oh, it's right there, there it is... for now.

The Bronski Beat song is from an album called Age of Consent. New Order is a band with a song called... Age of Consent. Conspiracy!

Jeez, this Round. Not done listening, but there are choices here that are way too good for this early in the game.

Round Seven rankings and thoughts.
1. Glen Campbell - I'm Not Gonna Miss You Haunting sound throughout the song. There's this sense of a great strength in its decline, a talent that is winding down, and, as a result, the vocalist attains an incredibly rich but vulnerable sound. This vulnerability is not something you anticipate in this genre, but its remarkable and holds your attention. The words are honest and touching, with an ultimate sense of happiness. The pounding piano works well with the guitar and rhythm section, adding a rock sensibility to the song that helps it to stand out. The emotion doesn't feel forced and there's a sense of genuine meaning. This is a song that had to be written and it hits a clear musical high point before ending gently.
2. Sam Hunt - Take Your Time (Live) I feel a live performance benefits this genre. Very risky choice and it registers as a country song for me with the chorus and the guitar playing. The speaking and singing parts help drive the sense of narrative. The singer is very charismatic and the backing vocals flesh out the sound. I enjoy that it avoids many of the cliches related to the genre while keeping the musical signatures. It gives a message that people can easily relate to, in a fashion that is very beautiful. The whole performance is stunning, imo. The emotions are on his sleeve and, as he goes deeper into the song, there is less speaking and more singing. The last minute or so employs a driving acoustic guitar sound that sums up the performance; the song builds nicely to it and it hits that moment in a very satisfying way. Just a gorgeous performance overall.
3. Chris Stapleton - Daddy Doesn't Pray Anymore The vocalist has such a rich tone that I hang on to his words. The slow pace of the song adds to the overall effect of the song and the instruments wisely add background sound without obscuring the vocals. I understand why the female vocals are present, but the song doesn't need them to flesh out the main vocals. They don't hurt, but they don't add as much as they could have. The harmonica sound pairs very well with the rest of the spare instrumentation. The section about the singer's father being buried is very emotional and I especially like the note held for "finally".
4. My Morning Jacket - Mahgeetah Another pick that straddles the confines of what a country song can be. The thing about country is that it has to be able to respond to new genres in order to refresh itself and, while this may not be the most obvious example of a hybrid country genre, there are enough guitar flourishes to evoke the sound. It's a flat out gorgeous song that builds into a few truly transcendent moments. The rhythm section is thrilling and the banjo playing is playful. The vocals may not be in a classical mode, but the theme isn't so strange to country music. There are intense moments between the drums and guitars and the harmony is lush. I love this selection for the round because it accomplishes something that's a bit different, while also having hints that it perfectly belongs to the theme. Also, cowbell!
5. Little Big Town - Girl Crush Utterly adore the vocals in this song. They are just full-bodied and powerful, with enough of a whispering quality to give them even more character. The background sound with the beats and the guitar strumming has an almost 50's girl group sense. The sensuality of kissing another woman and the talk of the other woman's qualities is quite evocative and almost unnerving. Like, imagine this in a rock context. Almost a bit scary. Like many of the songs this round, the instruments serve to highlight the vocals and those are out of this world. Very strong choice that subverts some of this genre's themes in a fascinating way. The effect is almost hypnotic.
6. Lady Antebellum - Need You Now Very emotional vocals that I feel play off each other well. I prefer the female singer's sound; it's both evocative and familiar. The feelings in the song feel genuine in the song and the female singer hits a few high notes to truly bring that point across. The piano work and the guitar playing feel appropriate to the song and there's a great fullness to the sound. It strays into heavier territory but still has enough of a country feel. The beat almost goes into business for itself but the strength of the voice lives up to the rest of the song. The instruments fit wonderfully with the vocals, a highlight being the almost lilting guitar playing, which also has a fuzzy quality I enjoy.
7. Luke Bryan - Country Girl (Shake It For Me) There's an unbelievable amount of energy here, but I think it follows a traditional songwriting structure a bit too closely. The vocals are infectious but it's almost like he has to hit a bunch of bullet points in terms of what his song is about. The guitar solo has a degree of weight to it and the presence of the banjo is much appreciated. It verges on a rock song in many ways and that's certainly a positive for me. It builds to a pretty strong ending, which I think works very well to distinguish it in this round, but I think if there was more of an attempt to blend the two sounds and to eschew a more conventional pattern, then the song could have attained an even more interesting dimension to it. As it is, there's a great sound at play here and he's charismatic as hell.
8. Lindi Ortega - Fall Down or Fly Beautiful vocals that wouldn't feel out of place in a more pop-oriented song. I don't know if there's enough variety in those vocals to carry the song, however. It plays well with the piano and the rhythm section, but the organ playing is a bit overblown. It tries to capture a more significant moment, but it doesn't work for me. Her voice maintains a beauty to it, but I don't feel that it hits the heights that the song is reaching towards. The effect created is a bit too repetitive for what the song is trying to do. The fades in a creative manner but I'm not sure it underscores what the song is try to do. There are beautiful elements here but it doesn't hit that high point.
9. Carrie Rodriguez and Ben Kyle - Your Lonely Heart I like how sprightly the song is and the fiddle sound adds layers to the sound. I feel that his voice drowns hers out a bit and, because of that, there's a busyness to the song that muddles things for me. I love the guitar solo in the middle portion of the song, with its great sense of control, which then transcends into a lovely fiddle sound. I think the instrumental aspect of the song is very well done but not as memorable as others. The vocals don't necessarily add up for me; there's nothing wrong with them per se, but they aren't as strong, imo, as they could be. It's a very pleasant song, but there's a lack of weight to it. I've heard a song where she's singing in Spanish and it has a much greater effect.
10. Johnny Cash - Streets of Laredo There's only one Johnny Cash and, while this a pretty emotional song, it's almost too on point for this Round. As much as I like the sound and respect this musical icon, it's too obvious of a choice. I would like to see this pop up in another Round where it could be unexpected. As far as the sound, it's haunting but some of the rhythm is odd. Imperfection can be an asset and it has a positive effect in the song, but he doesn't quite hit some of the high notes and that adds too much of a lugubrious tone to the vocals. It drags at times. Cash's incomparable personality comes out at times, but I think he's restricted too much with the folk song aspect of the piece and some of the idiosyncrasy of his performance is lost.
11. Craig Morgan - Redneck Yacht Club The song opens with such a joyous sound but I don't think it sustains that throughout. There's a bit too much going on in the lyrics, where the vocalist starts listing things that crowd the imagery. I don't think the song progresses enough for me. The keyboards add a nice touch, but that one flourish doesn't have enough of an impact to stick with me. There are great ideas here and an undeniable sound, but it doesn't add up for me. The chorus vocals toward the end are a bit unnecessary. There's nothing here that sounds off but it never reaches a high point musically.
12. Miranda Lambert - Kerosene Strong vocals but the song is a bit too repetitive for me. I enjoy the harmonica playing and the hard rock edge to the song, but the vocalist seems to clash a bit with some of the harder sections. There's a lot going on with the heavy drumming, harmonica playing, bass, tambourine, banjo, and the vocals and I don't think it adds up. There are moments that are very catchy but they are outweighed by how busy it is. The song also trails off a bit and I was expecting more of a finish. There's a lot to recommend, but there are other songs in this Round that get their point across better with less. I'm also finding it a bit difficult to follow the lyrics; there's a story here but it's not connecting with me.
13. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Still Unbroken Ah, the debate returns. Is Lynryd Skynryd "country" enough for this category or is it too firmly rooted in Southern rock? I think there is enough here with the string use and the particular guitar chords to qualify as country. The song doesn't connect with me as much as I would hope. It's very heavy but it feels too much of a re-tread of their past music crossed uncomfortably with country music. The vocals don't resonate with the same emotional weight as past Skynryd songs. It might not be fair to compare this line-up with a past one, but it doesn't seem genuine to me. The words are admirable, but I don't get enough musically to live up to them. There's a sense of energy but it doesn't ring true for me.
14. Blake Shelton - Austin The song just feels so self-aware and loses a great deal of emotional impact because of that. There's also a bit too much of a pop mentality for my tastes. Blake's voice is quite good, but it doesn't transcend the how slow the song is and its rather telegraphed song structure. Also, when you have the subject matter of some of the other songs, it makes this song much lighter in terms of emotional impact. The dramatic quality of the phone call is lacking for me.

I just sent my rankings and I've got to admit, I thought the round was slightly disappointing. There were only two songs that really made me go "oh yeah!" and everything else was at best good but not great.

Adding up scores now
Start sending in Round 8...
The Amazing Race is known for foreign traveling but more importantly it's about two people bonding on a giant Road Trip...
This time, your job is to send in a song that defines a Road Trip. Make the judges believe that they are driving down a country road....your song comes on....and just makes their trip perfect

(Also, will Brain be able to be a guest judge for Round 9, or do his IRL obligations inhibit that?)
