Well, that was to be expected. Also, expect a song within the hour.
Edit: Song in, Never compromise, not even in the face of Armageddon.

I guess we can go ahead and post the next round: ROUND 24: BRANCHING OFFPick 2 songs, one from a band or group, and another from one of the members of that group branching off as a solo artist. (Note: I will still accept songs from a solo artist BEFORE they join the group just to broaden the field and avoid any technicalities or whatever.) DEADLINE: Thursday at 6 PM Eastern (ish).

So, while I wait for my fate to be determined I feel as if I should explain my Al Jarreau comment for this previous round.
You see, I think about this game differently then most and when I saw time signatures in the round set up, the only thing I could think was the Dave Brubeck Album "Time Out". Easily the most influential album when it came to uncommon time signatures in recorded music.
Well, that album features two of my all)time favorite jazz tracks in Take Five and Blue Rondo A La Turk, written in 5/4 and 9/8 respectfully. But Brubeck's version of Take Five was already used, and my othe potential weird time guy was Pat Metheny, who I used this season.
Then I remembered, Al Jarreau has done vocal versions of Blue Rondo and Take Five, and they met the criteria on time difference and allowed me to pay tribute to a man who did more for uncommon time signatures than any other musical composer in history.
But you had to go and blow that spot up... Didn't you J?

Rankings and comments, innit:
1. Nirvana - "Heart Shaped Box" 2. St. Vincent - "Now, Now" 3. Anthrax - "Poison My Eyes" 4. St. Vincent - "Actor Out Of Work" 5. Melissa Etheridge - "Bring Me Some Water" 6. Anthrax - "Monster At The End" 7. Nirvana - "School" 8. Chiara Civello - "Parole Incerte" 9. Foo Fighters - "Low" 10. Chuck Mangione - "Land of Make Believe" 11. Chiara Civello - "Nature Song" 12. Foo Fighters - "Big Me" 13. Chuck Mangione - "Feels So Good" 14. Melissa Etheridge - "Nowhere To Go"
Anthrax - "Monster At The End"
Metal? Hm... I wonder if this'll score well with me! Yeah, needless to say, I really like it. It's actually not some of the best I've heard but it's still really damn good.
Anthrax - "Poison My Eyes"
Now this... THIS is showing the band's true potential. It's visceral, powerful metal just the way I like it. You can feel the old-school roots of the band but what makes it work is that it doesn't feel like a generic copycat. It's got a ton of individuality. Also, it's been nice to see Anthrax stuff other than "Bring the Noise".
Chiara Civello - "Nature Song"
Well... it's pretty and I suppose I wouldn't mind this as background music, but... a whimsical ambiance track way too safe for this far into the competition. It's not even a very original song in this genre.
Chiara Civello - "Parole Incerte"
It's very similar to the previous one, so... yeah. More of the same.
Chuck Mangione - "Feels So Good"
Well... that certainly follows in the footsteps of the Civello entries and while I usually like instrumental music, here it doesn't create enough of an atmosphere for me to really get behind this. It feels more like a show of skills rather than a proper song.
Chuck Mangione - "Land of Make Believe"
It's a little bit better, I guess? But again, not different enough to change my mind. Too safe people. Too safe.
Foo Fighters - "Big Me"
Never been that big into the Foo Fighters and this isn't changing much. There just isn't anything special about it to me. It's not annoying or anything but it went in one ear and out the other.
Foo Fighters - "Low"
It's an improvement over the previous entry and at least feels less (emphasis on "less") generic but I still don't think it stands out enough to deserve a high rank.
Melissa Etheridge - "Nowhere To Go"
I feel like I'm being a sourpuss on this round but once again, it's a song that really doesn't make me feel anything. It's so generic, I feel like I've heard stuff like this thousands of times and never really cared about any of them... it's just kind of there.
Melissa Etheridge - "Bring Me Some Water"
Wow! I'm actually very pleasantly surprised with this one! A lot more energy and a lot more passion went into in and it's very much communicative.
Nirvana - "School"
Nirvana is one of those bands where I find their most famous work to still be very good, their best stuff tends to be more obscure ones (something I'm sure Cobain would be very happy to hear) and this song... doesn't really show that but it's still very good.
Nirvana - "Heart Shaped Box"
And now, what may be my favourite Nirvana song. I just love it. It's beautiful, it's sad, it's moving, it's pretty much what Nirvana is all about. It's one of my favourite songs period and it's winning this thing.
St. Vincent - "Actor Out Of Work"
Never heard of that artist before and she is a very pleasant surprise. It sounds unique and I have a thing for songs that mix angry and even somewhat creepy lyrics like this with upbeat melody. Very unexpected choice and it pays off as far as I'm concerned.
St. Vincent - "Now, Now"
This confirms the above statement as I think I like this one even more than the previous one with the way it gets more and more unhinged as it goes and completely loses control at the end while always staying beautifully disturbing.

Which means we must say goodbye to Jazzman tonight.

I went with the Impression that I Get cover. I've grown up listening to marching bands and drum corps because of my brother and I thought that it was an excellent song fitting for the Sing-off.
I started getting into Punk about four years ago, maybe a little bit earlier. I enjoy Rancid very much and felt that song did interesting things with the vocals and the musical progression. I didn't choose it, but I'm glad that it got chosen.
Would love to have seen Jazzman continue. He's one of my favorite players and he brings music that either surprises the hell out of me or makes me smile because it reminds me of sounds that I love. It's a pleasure to see what he comes up with Season after Season.
Z-A's a fantastic player and can win this Season. He's already won a Season and he's shown that he's an excellent judge. He's another player that can come up with songs that challenge you and also hit that musical sweet spot. He's just a phenomenal player.
The final six are a veritable best of the best and I love what's coming up in terms of rounds.
Wish Jazzman could stick around, but happy that we still have Z-A... and kinda want to play myself now, cough.

I would like to take this post to announce that I am throwing my proverbial hat into the ring to be the host of the next season of Fan Idol, whenever that would be, maybe after WCOPC or whatever, but consider me in.

I was going to do that.... You could run "Metal Icon" as an intermittent side quest. SpiderFab, after a few rounds, gotta say you're doing a great job. You're present. You're checking things out everyday. You're PMing people. You're refraining from posting nudes. Bang up job!

I was going to do that.... You could run "Metal Icon" as an intermittent side quest. That's not a bad idea. It could also turn into a series of smaller, more focused games. We could have something like "FAN Idol: We love the '80s!" or "FAN Idol: International Edition" and run mini-games for interested people that cap at 10 rounds. Maybe even a team edition, with people signing up in teams like Quizzo or Team Trivia, and having it be versions of FAN Idol.
