3/4 judges in, now to post the next theme.  ROUND 25 - WEDDING It's Wedding Season! Right? I mean I've JUST been to 2 of them... So Send in one song that can work as a first dance song for the couple.  THEN send another song for the REAL dancing, when it's time for EVERYONE to BOOGIE DOWN! DEADLINE: Wendsday sometime. |

Welp, it's another one of these rounds where I have to keep changing my N°1 pick. I think it speaks volume about the quality of this round that I had to put one of my favourite artists in third place so far.

Important question: how are we supposed to know when individual songs are being scored and when pairs of songs are being scored? One set of rankings highly highly skews the mathematics and proportions (that is, the degree of importance) of one round to the next. For instance, if the next round is scored as individual songs, it basically means this round scored as a pair could be a wasted round, and the next one has way more weight on it. The back to back rounds that lead to elimination need to have equal proportions or else this is just Family Feud (where the first two rounds mean nothing except for laughs, and it all weighs on the four-answer-only triple point round).

It was something I and the judges discussed quite a bit. We did decide that, for each cycle of rounds, the songs would be scored the same, either individually & individually or pairs & pairs, so the next round would be scored as pairs. Yes I know this theme isn't quite fit to be scored as a pair as the previous theme was, but eventually I figured we'd try it. |

13 points ain't as bad as it seems when you're down to six (hell, Z got first with 19), but I'm definitely gonna be looking for a rebound. Now to figure my songs out.

I think that the balancing act you need to pull off with a round like this is to do something that's a bit outside the box (so don't go incredibly obvious even though the song seems like a home run) while, at the same time, not going too far away from what you would reasonably expect to fit the theme. That's what makes this game so difficult, you can't take the obvious pick anymore.

It was a tricky thing deciding both songs as typically the songs played at weddings both for slow dancing and dancing dancing are kind of like sometime comes down to what can Granny cut a rug to and what ultra safe song will not offend even the most old fashioned family member at the wedding. It's a balancing act trying to hit theme compliance and something good for the judges. |

Honestly, I'm a bit disappointed. I love me some Black Sabbath but this doesn't hold up to their usual standards. It feels more like some randome band trying hard to imitate Black Sabbath but not quite getting it.
Ozzy Osbourne - "Perry Mason"
Now this on the other hand is a great example of Osbourne's work. This classic metal vibe with A LOT of personality and evenmore talent. You can't mistake it for any other artist and you wouldn't want to because he is way ahead of most people.
Can - "Vitamin C"
It's one of those things that I really like and I can't really explain why. The repetitive nature of it could easily get grating, but they pull it off. Maybe it's just the unusual melody that keeps it novel, maybe the relaxing tone just works for me. Whatever it is, it's good one.
Holger Czukay - "Cool In The Pool"
Whoa. That was weird. And I like weird. I thought "Vitmain C" sounded unusual, apparently Can was actually reining this guy in. I really like this funky and somewhat trippy sound. It feels like something that should be on the soundtrack of a Jet Set Radio game.
The Eagles - "Witchy Woman"
It's a shamethat Eagles is often dismissed as a one hit wonder because as this track shows, they've got plenty of talent up their sleeve. One thing I find especially impressive about this one is that although Eagles is often portrayed as one of the most American things to ever be American in America, this song really has a European feel to it, maybe even Eastern European. And it works really well to me.
Joe Walsh - "Life's Been Good To Me"
...
... and in another example of a genre I didn't expect from an artist from Eagles, have some Reggae! I was also surprised to find it was released in 1978 because it sounds very modern. And it works really well and fits the satirical lyrics perfectly. That's... that's a really amazing surprise.
Fleet Foxes - "Lorelai"
You know... I kind of hate that this song is in this round. Because it's very good and it deserves a high ranking. But the other entries have just been so good that this one doesn't quite reach their extremely high standards and I can't in good conscience bring them down just to push this one. Here's hoping its partner blows me away.
Father John Misty - "Funtimes in Babylon"
And... well, it's more of the same (in fact, I'm a bit surprised it's a solo song as it sounds very similar to the Fleet Foxes one). Once again, very good work but the rest of the entries have just been too damn good.
N.W.A. - "Straight Outta Compton"
Classic rap, we meet again. Unfortunately, this isn't as good as the other similar tracks we've heard from the likes of Tupac, Snoop Dogg or Coolio and in fact, it's the kind of rap I really don't like. Bragging, bragging, bragging without any substance and no attempt at making it sound good.
Eazy-E - "Boyz In Da Hood"
It's better but it's still not my thing. I recognize that there is more effort to make it a proper song but it's still a whole lotta impotent bragging and it doesn't help that Eazy-E strikes me as the weakest link of N.W.A.
Stiffed - "It's Unanimous"
Don't know when this song was made but it really takes me back to my teenagehood where I listened to a lot of this kind of stuff and I still love it. It's catchy and despite a lot of bands sounding similar, it's got its own identity that makes it stand out.
Santigold - "L.E.S. Artistes"
Hm, I'm actually a bit disappointed in this. Don't get me wrong, it's good but not nearly as much as "It's Unanimous" and it suffers from the same problem as Fleet Foxes/Father John Misty in that it's overshadowed by the rest of the entries.

Well...I guess you can just go ahead and call me Simon Cowell this round. This is the first round that I've judged this season that I haven't been enamored with at all unfortunately. By and large pretty disappointing.
