Another game based off Colors could have been amazing. Everything was there but small things kept the game from being as good as Generations. That's kinda been the problem with all of Sonic's latest games. Instead of building on what worked in earlier games (even the ones that were not good) and removing the stuff that didn't... they took a "BURN IT DOWN!" mentality and started over.

If Colors has a bad rep, it's news to me. I don't think it's as great a game as Generations, but it's still enjoyable. But then again I also enjoyed Sunshine, and lord knows the grief it gets. Whatever. Imma do me. I haven't played Colors but I generally hear decent but not stellar things. As for Sunshine... Honestly I've grown more and more fond of it over the years. It still definitely has its problems but it's still certainly fun and I've grown to appreciate it more for what an oddball in the series it is compared to how Mario's steadily become more and more formulaic since. One of the big reasons I'm excited for Odyssey is it looks way more like Sunshine than it does, say, 3D World. For me it's the opposite. I used to like Sunshine, but hated it over the years, for various reasons. But I digress. I only mentioned it because Doom used reviews to defend Sunshine once(in the vg youshoot thread) if he tried to use the "reviews don't matter" defense.

This wait is excruciating. I have to get up early to check out my new college campus and Sonic the god forsaken Hedgehog is keeping me up later than I should be. We're so closeeeee! (Switch version is on PST release time)

I was a Sega kid through and through but despite that I was never enamored with Sonic. I liked 1, 2, and Adventure 1 and 2. That's it. Yet for some reason I'm excited this one and picking it up at midnight. It just looks like good, clean fun. Plus it's got a multiplayer mode so my girlfriend and I should be able to enjoy that.

So I've gotten it, haven't gotten too far yet (I'm a Chaos Emerald grabber, and I do like to know where those special stages are ASAP).
However, I did find a neat trick with bonus stages. Apparently, sign-posts regenerate...so the first two in Green Hill Zone, I've gone back and forth to keep going into the Bonus Stages...which unlock medals for new powers and modes (silver for just completing, gold for Perfects).
ALSO: glad for Sonic & Tails mode, they have a way that you can use Tails without getting a second controller. Apparently that was in the mobile ports of Sonic games in the past, but it's still a nice feature.

I love this more than the themes for Big Arm & Big Swell.

I won't spoil anything, I'll just say a) there is WAY more to this game than they unveiled for anyone concerned about that and b) they included one of my favorite zones ever as a total surprise, and that made me over the moon just to see it. {Spoiler}HYDROCITY ZONE!!! Still not done. Absolutely love what they've done, though. I was initially against the idea of reimagining old zones until I saw just how deep they went. Act 1 is basically a refined version of a zone made to be familiar and outright identical in certain respects. Act 2 is basically them using the level's theme and creating a "what if?" scenario with it; totally new stuff. It's almost like playing secret zones cut from the game that just got unearthed or something...of course, with widescreen (SONIC BENEFITS SO MUCH FROM WIDESCREEN!) and high-def 16-bit graphics. It really does feel like a Sega Saturn game in terms of some of the design choices, the music especially, and the early-style 3D in the game seen in the bonus UFO level. It's like...imagine if your favorite band recorded a bunch of songs in the prime of their career from your favorite albums, and only in 2017 were these secret albums unearthed. It sounds familiar to what you've loved all your life, but it still feels different while retaining the elements of what you love and hold close to your heart. That's what this game is to me. It shouldn't exist, and I love that it does.

It's funny that they got in a dude that was a renown Sonic modder as essentially the project lead and they nail the old school Sonic feel and design.
Meanwhile SEGA themselves just kept on throwing out everything for each new release and then wondering why nobody was clicking with the new Sonic games. Sonic Unleashed was alright in that the day segments were pretty good (outside from technical issues) while the Werehog segments were pretty bad, Colours improved on Unleashed by cutting the werehog & ironing out technical problems and ended up a pretty good game, Generations improved on Colours and was well received. And then SEGA threw all that improvement and momentum out with Lost World which was a wannabe Super Mario Galaxy that was not fun & then threw that out for Sonic Boom which was absolute butts.

They didn't make Sonic Boom directly, so I'll cut them slack on that. Though, they also slashed its production schedule and rushed it out, so I am going to staple the slack right back on, as it coming out in that state is still ultimately Sega's fault.

Secret rings was the one that bugged me the most, A great idea but damn unplayable due to the Camera & Controls and whoever thought adding the RPG elements was a good idea deserves a slapping. A sequel could've been great but no we got "Black Knight" instead

I bought Sonic Mania and I'll just say that the Chemical Plant boss was seriously where I was like "Okay, this is amazing.".

So... the Special Stages are frustrating. Maybe I'm just terrible or something, but they're definitely not easy.

So... the Special Stages are frustrating. Maybe I'm just terrible or something, but they're definitely not easy. I was never good at any of the special stages other than the blue spheres. I'm on the last level and I've only managed to get 1 emerald. So I'm terrible too.
