I like Mask of the Phantasm fine but really the biggest issue with it for me is just that it honestly just doesn't feel like part of the DCAU. It really feels like just some unrelated thing happening to use the same designs and characterization with the only actual indicator it is canon being Phantasm randomly showing up in Justice League once. Granted I think one of the reasons I didn't quite get into the movie as much as most is I saw Under the Red Hood first, they hit on very similar themes, and I just happen to prefer it. I can understand that; to be honest I don't care about where it does/doesn't fit within anything. I honestly didn't even know Phantasm showed up again. I even sort of look at it as totally separate from ANY of the series. As a stand-alone Batman story I'm perfectly fine with it being completely cut off from anything. For my $, if you can have a perfect Batman that takes the best parts from any iteration of the character and you can say 'that's Batman'--then that's him. Red Hood was well done. I honestly just don't like bringing Jason Todd back, so I'm never gonna feel as strongly about it. It was a kinda Easter Egg where they tie Batman Beyond to the DCU with Terry being Bruce's son. Waller hired Phantasm to kill Terry's parents, but she couldn't go through with it.

Ah, that's fine I guess; but I'm even more fine with them just having Andrea Beaumont in the one story. Like I said, I like Phantasm just as this standalone thing.
And neither Jason Todd nor Reilly should've come back I don't think. Todd I like as Bruce's one big failing. Reilly, ALL the clone shit has always been stupid.
Bucky is the only real dead for decades character I like being back, and that's cuz Brubaker really did the work to make James Barnes a much more interesting character both post bringing him back, and with all the retconned stuff he added to Bucky's backstory.

I think Jason Todd works for that one story just fine, but he should've died unable to be redeemed with that being the end of it. Pretty much how the movie plays it and that's a positive but it has seriously diluted him and the story itself continuing to have him bounce around the universe going from lovable antihero to impaling Tim Drake and back again because no one can figure out what the hell to do with him.

So with Wonder Woman II and Aquaman in the can whatever comes next... is going to be different in terms of a shared universe. Which is kind of a shame given the characters.
Zack Synder is a fine director. He can make a pretty film, but the man had three (or really two and half) tries at this and was rejected by critics and audiences. He really should have had only one.

Honestly as much as I hate them, the DCEU needs a reboot or at least a soft one (erase everything not Wonder Woman)
It's become toxic at this point

The flame thrower he attached to the back of the Batmobile in Returns sure as hell didn't, though. Sometimes you just can't get rid of a circus arsonist.

I'd forgotten they'd been filming Aquaman all this time. That one's probably going to bomb hard.

Do it before the Batman solo film. The Flashpoint thing to me just seems... really, really stupid. You're basically dooming yourself to making a movie no one's going to care about or go see that'd probably have a budget through the roof and it probably wouldn't even actually work to reinvigorate interest in the brand going, "Yeah, yeah, we screwed up and ruined a bunch of shit but now we're just pretending it didn't happen yet still following up on it!" I really think they're better off keeping the budget for Aquaman as low as is possible at this point (no idea why on earth they thought starting with a movie based on someone 98% of the public sees as a complete joke right off the bat was a good idea to begin with instead of waiting until the brand was more solidified but whatever), going ahead and doing a couple more Wonder Woman movies since she's got momentum, and then after that's done just starting completely fresh a year or two later. DC needs to take some time to both plan things better and to reignite demand for their product.

Flashpoint worked because we had YEARS of seeing the characters as we know and love em, when Flashpoint happened it was a bit of a shock seeing them in such a different light (sure we had elseworlds but they weren't OUR heroes) DCEU hasn't built up enough yet for Flashpoint.

My personal favorite Batman movie is The Dark Knight. But out of all the theatrical movies. Phantasm feels like a perfect introduction to the Batman franchise. It nails down Bruce's angst and Batman's darkness, and it acknowledges the heart of his character. Hamil's Joker is a close second favorite for me next to Ledger's.
The Burton films, Batman Begins and Lego Batman would take up my #3 through #6 slots. Affleck for the most part has been a very good Batman, like Cavill he's dealt with some subpar writing but their actual performances are fine.
West was awesome, but his Batman almost feels like its own character to me.
The Schumacher films have a ton of issues, but even those are enjoyably campy. Especially Arnold just going ham.

I saw Star Wars Episode II in theaters seven times. I was 17 and had no bills, in retrospect I realize how excessive that is. It's not even a money thing for me, I just can't see sitting through something that many times in that rapid a succession and not just bein bored to shit. My most watched theatrical film was The Lion King three times, and the last viewing was a field trip. This year I saw Get Out twice, the last one being a date with a friend. The vast majority of the time I'd rather see an amazing movie once in theaters and then move onto the next film I'm interested in. When I can find the time to go to the movies, I'd like to be going into a fresh storyline.

I realize my perspective is different, not being a mega comic book fan or anything of the sort, but I kind of feel like some people are choking the fun from this movie. Focusing so much on rotten tomatoes and box offices and past movies and certain details and Marvel... like, f***.
I went, I saw, I loved. That's pretty much where I go with it.

I do feel like Tomato-scores get too much attention. Like HMARK mentioned earlier, if you actually read film reviews they are more nuanced than a simple good/bad or rotten/fresh binary.

I'm there with ya only I liked rather than loved. For me it was: 'That was more fun than I thought it would be.' Superman actually feeling like Superman cured a lot of ills for me. Like I can see why people wouldn't like it for a variety of reasons, but for me I'm like: "Eh, the good was enough there for me to enjoy it."

In general, I don't pay attention to what critics write. I know me enough to know whether I'll like something or not, regardless of what someone I don't know thinks. So for me, it's a total shrug and move on aspect anyway.
