I hate making threads like this but I don't know where else to turn. For about the last three years I've been having some weird facial pains. Just a dull pressure that comes and goes on the left side starting from just above my eyebrow and traveling down between my left eye and nose and into the upper part of my gums. I've been to an ENT and they've put me on various antibiotics, nasal sprays and allergy meds, none of which have helped. I even had a CT scan done of my sinuses and it showed nothing. Finally my ENT said it might be a dental issue, and since I hadn't been to a Dentist in about a decade (I have my issues with them, I see no reason to justify myself) I figured that was as good as any lead to follow up on.
So I made a Dentist appointment and saw him about two weeks ago. I got a cleaning, a check-up and full set of X-Rays taken. The Dentist only saw two issues -
1. My teeths roots seem to be disappearing. He believes it's genetic (my Mom had a similar issue a couple years before her death), but the teeth are in my mouth securely so he doesn't see this as a major issue right now, nor any reason why it would cause my facial pain.
2. I have some old mercury fillings that he recommends I get replaced with composite fillings. I made an appointment to start doing that at the end of August.
He believes the pain might be from a TMJ problems and gave me a night guard. The night guard seemed to be helping at first, but over the last few days the pain has come back and much more localized in the gums area over one of my teeth (if my research is correct, its one of my upper left pre-molars, second from center). It actually gets pretty intense at times and the tooth is very sensitive to cold liquids. After doing a little research, I think I might have some form of pulpitis, and yes, this is one of the teeth the Dentist wants to change the fillings on.
So I have two questions to any dental knowledgeables on FAN -
1. Is it possible to have pulpitis and have it not show up on an X-ray and a competent Dentist miss it in an exam?
2. Can this wait until my exam at the end of August or could this potentially be a serious enough emergency that I should try to get the Dentist to see me sooner?
