Good on Zlatan for actually looking thrilled to have won a cup. It pisses me off how the League Cup, FA Cup, and Europa League are written off as "Mickey Mouse Cups". A team and their fans should be happy to win anything. That's what football should be about. Hell I remember back in the day a club like Nottingham Forest would play out of their skins to win even relatively minor cups like the Zenith Data Systems Cup and the frickin' Anglo-Scottish Cup. See it doesn't matter how valuable a cup is, they all look great when under lights in your club's trophy case. Personally I blame the Champions League and Premier League. Because of the money involved, clubs regard qualifying for the CL and staying in the PL as being more important than winning a cup. It will be the death of meaningful football. It wounds me to see fans celebrating something like finishing fourth in the Premier League. I've been seeing a lot of "Ha! United actually consider the Club World Cup a major trophy?" comments on social media posts regarding United passing Liverpool as the English club with the most major trophies. In South America and Asia that competition is seen as the most prestigious club competition, while in Europe it's pretty much seen as a joke competition to fans of clubs not involved, and an annoyance for those that are, while the PL and CL are seen as the only things that truly matter. It's all bollocks. A trophy is a trophy is a trophy. Players and fans alike should be overjoyed whenever their club brings home some silverware, whether it's the Champions League, the League Cup, or the Checkatrade Trophy. I thought United only equalled Liverpool yesterday? Or is it like you said, which trophies are "officially" considered major? Either way, Liverpool changed their official Twitter bio to represent that. link

The closest to "official" classification of what is considered a major trophy is a trophy that requires multiple fixtures to win - hence why United's World Club Cup win in 2008 is listed (contested by 8 teams) and their Intercontinental Cup win in '99 isn't (contested by two teams). Under that classification United lead 42-41.

Someone on Twitter said that Liverpool are the Robin Hood of the Premier League. Take points from the rich, give them to the poor.
That's the perfect way to describe them over the past few years. They're almost guaranteed to beat Arsenal but, what's the point if you can't beat the teams you're supposed to beat?

Also, it would have been nice for the Leicester players to have played like that more often when their league winning manager was with them but, whatever. He's only the best they've had and one of the classiest men in world football. No big deal.

If they were to lose that, Champions League hopes - which took a hit today - would be hanging in the balance. Their one saving grace is that City and United's game in hand is against one another, but that still means one of the two is guaranteed to gain points on them.

Under that classification United lead 42-41. I actually think only the leagues and confederation-wide cups should count as "major" trophies. However, that's not even the stupidest thing about dong measuring with clubs trophies. In both Portugal and Spain both major teams (so FC Porto and SL Benfica in Portugal, Real Madrid and Barça in Spain) measure theirs by the number of official trophies. Well, some of them like to count a few trophies that they consider to be official because it's convenient while others don't. Fortunately, UEFA and FIFA came up and said clearly that "only trophies recognized by us and the respective federation count", making it a leveled field in that regard. For example, Benfica and, I believe, Real Madrid were counting the Latin Cup (which would be one of the bases from which the European Champions Cup would be born) in their portfolio, when that wasn't an official recognized competition (it wasn't organized nor recognized by either FIFA nor UEFA and had participants from multiple countries, so the individual national associations organizing it couldn't claim it as a competition of their own as well), so it could only be counted as a "friendly international competition" (which it actually was, as there was no other prize at the time and barely any bragging rights if any). And I'm sure there's worse out there with other similar "international cups" that sprawled between the WW1 and the establishment of both the ECC and the UEFA Cup.

Liverpool need to learn what happens when you reward players with bigger contracts for winning nothing

Big game in the Championship tonight. Table toppers Brighton are at home to 2nd place Newcastle. A win for Brighton tonight would be huge as they look to get to the Premier League for the first time. As Brighton is a 45 minute drive from me I will be cheering them on. Newcastle have a tough schedule coming up with Huddersfield and Reading away after this game.

DC United break ground on Audi Field which won't open till June 2018, I could see United open the season with a Tempoary home (probaly Fedex field) or playing on the road till probaly after WC2018 as this year is the farewell year of deteriorating RFK Stadium

Brilliant second half performance from the lads tonight. Just wish we could get it together for 90mins at the moment - was exactly the same on Saturday against Bristol City, a torrid first half followed by an excellent second. Sure we needed a bit of luck in what was possibly the most flukey goal scored in the history of football but man our play merited that and the second goal was pure genius, hell of a ball from Ritchie, great control and cross from Atsu and good movement and finish from Ayoze. It's a big win but the biggest game is Saturday's. I don't care whether we finish 1st or 2nd, as long as we go up I'm happy so taking three points off Huddersfield is far more important than taking three points off Brighton.
Do still hope Brighton come up with us though, a great team playing great football and I will never forget what Chris Hughton did for us while he was here, he deserves another shot at the big time after being so unfairly dismissed by us.

If Newcastle beat Huddersfield and Reading, that should be enough to secure an automatic promotion spot, barring a spectacular collapse.

Not exactly out of keeping with us, a spectacular collapse so regardless of how those two huge games go, I won't be counting my chickens until they've hatched (if they hatch).

I still can't decide if that's a complete fluke, the deftest piece of skill I've ever seen, or a bit of both. He definitely flicked his heel towards the ball, but I don't know if he really expected to direct it goalwards.

Luis Enrique has announced he will leave Barcelona when his contract expires in the summer. No surprise there. The last two champions league campaigns have been very disappointing by their standards and most people agree that was down to his tactics late in the competition.
