Speaking of Mr. President, is Alec Baldwin coming back this season? If not, then maybe they should just go with Leslie Jones like in that film last season.

I don't think Baldwin's coming back as a regular. They'll need an in-house Trump impersonator. And they certainly have options even though the best one IMO, Anthony Atamanuik, is doing his own thing on Comedy Central.

I can only imagine the stuff they'll do this season. The Trump White House is a comedy goldmine. It's like every president they've lampooned times a trillion. As long as they don't overdo it, which is a problem I had in the last season. There's a variety of things to do sketches about. Sometimes you just don't want to talk politics. There's no way. The way they shredded Clinton and W., Trump is like a sketch character, and he surrounds himself with people who are asking to get roasted. And Taran had a solid Trump impression, but I wouldn't be surprised if they dusted off Darrell Hammond to come back. Hammond-Trump Aidy Bryant-Sarah Sanders Mikey Day-Don Jr. Alex Moffat-Eric Cecily Strong-Melania *Scarlett Johanssen-Ivanka *Bill Hader-Scaramucci *Melissa McCarthy-Spicer *Special occasions. Should be a fun season with the impressions people bust out.

But don't worry, Melissa, I'm sure there's lots of frumpy, foul mouth, falling down roles left for people to foist onto you.

Alec has said he'll be back for Trump, but it won't be as often as it was last season. I like the political sketches but I'd like to see them rely less on Trump.

Last season of Saturday Night Live had some of its best ratings ever due in part to the political stuff. It ain't stopping anytime soon.

Just wanted to bump this thread, as the 69th Annual Creative Arts Emmys were handed out over this past weekend.
And SNL has a couple of winners!
Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series went to Dave Chappelle, for his hosting stint Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series went to Melissa McCarthy, for her hosting stint
The show also won:
Outstanding Make-Up for a Multi-Camera Series or Special (Non-Prosthetic) Outstanding Production Design for a Variety, Nonfiction, Reality, or Reality-Competition Series Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control for a Series

Well-deserved Emmys. Chappelle in particular killed it as guest host.

Just seems a bit more personal now at times. Probably because the people in charge are total trainwrecks. For SNL, this has to be Clinton and the two Bush administrations combined. Then multiplied by a trillion.

Does anybody else think Kenan Thompson will never leave?

That and when Trump has made tons of disparaging tweets about SNL when they make jokes at his expense and calling for their cancellation, well, it kinda is personal for them. SNL's going to make fun of the President, regardless of political party, on a near-regular basis anyway, but Trump's the gift that keeps on giving.

I thin the problem with the current political sketches is that it's such low hanging fruit. The Trump presidency has been so absurd that it's hard to satirize it, because the sketches look like they could've actually happened. At least with Bush, while Bush did provide a lot of late night material, Will Ferrell's Bush became a character of his own.

Ferrell is a once-in-a-generation talent when it comes to that sort of thing. His "stand up" performance as Dubya at the end of his presidency (or the beginning of Obama's?. I forget.) was brilliant in its absurdity. Will Forte did a good job after Ferrell left, but they were big shoes to fill and I don't think he ever quite filled them.
I don't know if anyone on the current cast is like Ferrell in that way. As I've said before, Alec Baldwin can only do so much as a guest star and we know for sure he's going to be scaling back his appearances on the show, especially compared to last season.

I think it's because Obama wasn't very funny to make fun of outside of the way he speaks with his frequent pauses. I don't think they really found the right guy to impersonate him, either. Jay Pharaoh was alright, but Fred Armisen was pretty bad.
But they did a good job of lampooning both Clintons, John Kerry, Al Gore, Bernie Sanders, etc.

Personally, my favorite was Norm as Dole. Like Ferrell, he just took the name and the basic look, and made a brand new character out of him.

Trying to tip to here, but unless they found a up an coming comedian who took tanning pills to get into Harvard...

Does anybody else think Kenan Thompson will never leave? A better question, will he ever develop a different character?
