I just watched Raw 229 from October 1997, and the crowd noise was consistently edited into silence, especially during the second half of the show. It's not even like dead crowd silence, it's soundbooth recording, crowd wasn't on mic silence. At first I thought it was because the crowd chanted Asshole or something, but it lasted way too long for that. I've seen it during several other Raws, as well, at times it wouldn't make sense for any such chant.
So, to put my question about this as succinctly as possible...f*** is this shit? It's really weird and almost unnerving seeing that many people literally silenced.

I'll just guess it was practice for the guy who mutes Reigns reactions now.

Perhaps they don't want people watching the network realizing how much more the crowd loved the show back then.

Perhaps they don't want people watching the network realizing how much more the crowd loved the show back then. I know it was jarring to me going back and seeing that a huge pop today isn't 1/10th of the pop for a Test match.I began questioning things and then thinking thoughts.

Didn't they have loads of technical difficulties in 1997? Maybe they were have audio issues.

It's even weirder when you can tell a reaction has been muted and it's still louder than the pops people get today.

I made this topic about Raw 229, so I will update that Raw 230 also features this as early as the second segment. Humorously, in the first segment, Vince McMahon says, and I quote, "You can't tell the fans of the WWF who to cheer for!"

Maybe the poor guy editing his 9000th hour of footage decided to randomly mute it just to liven up his day.
He also edited a Game Over sign and the seventh line of a K-Kwik rap.

I am working through the 1998 episodes of RAW. I thought it was strange that the crowd barely seemed to react to anything (except Vince who always gets a big negative reaction). If the crowd noise were being muted that would make sense. The storylines are also pretty confusing I get the impression that most plot development happens on HEAT.

OK snark aside, can we use our Columbo-like detective skills and see what's up here? Nothing coincided with music changes, did it? Maybe some error in mixing sound for the master tapes?

The music didn't seem off to me. It's most noticeable during matches and promos, so there wouldn't be music playing then in the first place.

And the ppvs from the same time period do have loud crowd noise during the matches so it is even stranger during RAW when crowds are so quiet.

Going through 1997 Raws right now, and a lot of them do seem to have the "production difficulties" disclaimer.

I really do kind of wish they'd have more transparency about this stuff. People who will complain even with one are already doing it, but I could stomach this sort of shit easier if they could point to some sort of copyright problem, etc.

Some of the late 97 crowds aren't as hot as most attitude era crowds to begin with.

November 3, 1997 does not feature this. But it does feature the crowd chanting "Faggot" at Triple H, cause wrestling is classy. The fact I'd totally understand if they edited it out in this case, and they didn't do anything about it, only makes it weirder when they actually do edit it.
Update: they chant it at Billy Gunn later, too. Classy, classy crowd.
