I've been rewatching Bump In The Night and it just dawned on me that there are a lot of similarities between it and Spongebob. Does anyone agree with this or am I just seeing things? I especially see it with the three main characters Bumpy (main character) is an adventurous dimwitted but generally nice guy who looks out for others. Like Spongebob Squishington (best friend) Shares most interests with Bumpy but is a little more timid and slow. Like Patrick Molly (female friend) Usually the voice of reason. Smarter, braver and tougher than Bumpy and Squishington . Like Sandy So what do you think?

I never got into Bump in the Night that much, as I was much younger when it was on and the claymation style turned me off back then (for kid me, if it wasn't drawn animation, to hell with it). But I did catch a couple episodes and....yeah, I can see it. I always thought Squishington was more scared than slow, more like a Chuckie Finster than Patrick, but maybe I remember that wrong.
I also don't remember Molly having any kind of accent or cultural qualities. I could be wrong on that too...right now, I can't recall what she sounded like at all.
It helps them seem like different shows in that the settings were entirely different. You could have similar situations at times (especially with how long Spongebob has been on, it's starting to hit that "Simpsons Did It" level where it's covered damn near every trope imaginable), but a kid's bedroom and an ocean/sea provide for different stuff.

I liked it, and there are some similarities, but it's also a pretty familiar formula. Spongebob seems to take some cues, particularly in the early seasons, from Ren and Stimpy, too, particularly with stuff like the overly-realistic drawings they use for closeups and some grossout humor.

I can definitely see some elements from BITN that got borrowed for Sponge Bob (there are some strong similarities between Squishington and Patrick, in particular).

Never thought of this. Kind of interesting analysis.
I remember this show originally starting out as short bumpers between commercials.
