So I have been watching some Nitros from 96/97 and for a while I have been watching some old 80s episodes of JCP's WCW. All I want to know is what the hell happened Schiavone. He was really good commentator on the old TBS show and then just became completely awful for Nitro. Was it David Crockett making him look good? Was he jealous that Crockett got to suck so bad and he wanted to emulate that?

Simple it was the NWO. Pretty much you had Bischoff in his ear telling him to hype everything as the greatest night ever and to talk about the NWO nonstop during matches.

I think it was having to deal with Bischoff being his "director" of a sort.

Tony Skee-uh-vohn was great in the 80s but Bischoff neutered him in WCW

I've been watching shows from 2000 recently and the commentary is just hopeless. Schiavone just doesn't give a shit anymore, then again, he is working with Mark Madden, which explains a lot.

I love him and always have, even during the NWO era and the end of WCW.

Bischoff was in his ear, he was being extremely political with his co-hosts i.e. lying to them and literally not telling them what was going to happen, and the show was turning into a mess all over the place so he gradually stopped caring like everybody else in WCW.

This f***er blocked me on Twitter and I couldn't begin to tell you why. Never had any interaction whatsoever with the guy.
But yeah, the answer is a combo of Bischoff ruining him/not giving a shit in general.

Iirc he started giving less and less shits around 1994/95 when Hulkamania and friends was in full force. He got gradually worse until it was obvious he couldn't care less about the product in 1999

He got gradually worse until it was obvious he couldn't care less about the product in 1999 I still love how excited he was for the Yeti at the end of Halloween Havoc 95. Here you have this completely stupid moment and gimmick, but Tony is just so excited. It brings a smile to my face.

Summerslam 89 he commentated on and he's, I think, a great foil for Ventura. Not seen enough of his WCW commentary yet, but I was always a fan of the guy and feel he deserves a HOF place

On Nitro, his annoying commentary made me side with the heels because I didn't want to agree with him. He just reminded me of Bob Costas, which doesn't help.

I know it's an ironic thing to say, but wrestling used to be more real than it is now-I'm sure Tony was being told what to say, thus all the shit he got for the Foley comment-he never would have done that back in the day-I'm glad people are getting to see how good he really was with the old 80s stuff on the network.

I don't think he was all that bad until Russo came along. He was better in the 80s (and his best ever run might've been that short stint in the WWF), but by late 1999 you could tell he wanted out. Didn't help that Heenan was about 5 years past putting in his best effort and I would've gone mad working with Scott Hudson and Mark Madden.

I couldn't take Hudson seriously after seeing him do Nitro shirtless-but keeping the tie.

His call in the 1990 Rumble ('There is not a person sitting down') is one of my favourites of all time.
