I was watching the June 14, 2001 Smackdown episode for no particular reason. The first match was Edge and Christian vs Benoit and Jericho, and there actually was a chapter stop for this match, only it was listed "Edge and Christian in tag team action". Thought that was a better method of not calling attention to benoit's matches than just leaving out the chapter stops for his matches.

Yeah, this was announced a while back they were going to start doing it. I'm fine with it, makes it easier to navigate. They still haven't done it to everything yet, but that's a lot of ground to cover throughout three companies and 13 years.

Have a pop-up picture of Stevie Richards at the point wherever the match should be on the time line. Sure only we'd get it, but hey!

I mean yeah, if they are intentionally gonna be awkward and make it so you can't search for Benoit, at least let us have a chapter break for his matches. Makes stuff like Summerslam 2004 a PAIN.

Think it's pretty dumb to do that honestly. Yeah, don't promote him, don't advertise him, don't honor him, that's all perfectly fair and the right move, but nobody's going to get offended just from seeing his name in a match listing, if they are then frankly they're so oversensitive that their opinion shouldn't matter, and it's just an inconvenience for the people who might want to watch a specific one of his matches.

Me and my husband (especially my husband because Benoit was his favorite wrestler) have made the decision to never watch one of his matches again but seeing is name doesn't bother us and would in fact make it easier on us because we'd know what to skip.

Pretty much, yeah. It's mutually beneficial to those who do and do not want to watch his stuff.

WWE is a publicly traded company. They are responsible to shareholders and advertisers. When you watch the WWE Network, you occasionally get advertisements from external advertisers like the KFC one or the Mountain Dew one. So let's say you just searched for a Chris Benoit match and skip straight to that chapter. Before it loads, you get an advert. KFC just advertised to you while piggy backing onto half an hour of footage of a guy who killed his family, including his young disabled son. WWE cannot let that happen, because regardless of what you guys or I may think, advertisers and corporations and the general idiotic public at large will find a way to get offended by that shit. I too would appreciate Benoit being labelled so that I could avoid him entirely. But we live in a world where over here in the UK, someone accidentally played the Christian Bale rant uncensored on a pre-9am show. The hosts immediately, profusely apologised because it was an error. They still received dozens of emails and phone calls demanding they apologise despite having immediately apologised.
I don't care how inconvenient it is for people like us who are able to compartmentalise these things. The kinds of people who are unable to are the kinds of people that can break a brand and turn out in force for the most idiotic bullshit.
It's not WWE that needs to move on. It's the world at large. And they ain't moving on any time soon.

I think they've dealt with it perfectly. Keep him intact but don't acknowledge him at all. Everybody wins. If I ever find I'm able to watch his matches again, I know where to get them.

Yeah, I can watch his stuff. I know what he did. Do people do this with all mediums? Like, I can watch 40 Year-Old Virgin and laugh, knowing the one guy brutally stabbed his girlfriend.

Some of it is since people get a more personal impression of wrestlers, especially since Benoit wrestled under his name. Still, valid question, I know people can watch Jeepers Creepers, or Roman Polanski movies, etc.

And they ain't moving on any time soon. It would be a lot easier to not show the ads whenever there is a Benoit tag then without the tag. I'm sure there is some internal tag though which will not trigger the ad if you are purposely looking for his matches. Not having Benoit tagged is all about WWE washing their hands like oh we don't have nothing to do with it, rather than some moral thing or what not. I'm sure if they have lost the steroid trial and somehow survived til this day Hulk Hogan would have not been tagged either.
