No free rides for babies at Heritage Classic: Report

The overlords at the National Hockey League finally took a stand against the ultimate freeloaders in modern society – babies.


Originally reported by CTV News, Clifford Anderson and Shalyn Meady dropped $800 on two Heritage Classic tickets to see the Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers play outdoors. They assumed they could bring their six month old baby as a lap guest; as they’re able to do at Jets and Winnipeg Blue Bombers games (whose home field will host the game).

Just to be sure, the parents reached out to the Jets and then the NHL. That’s when the hammer came down.

They were told to buy another seat at $400 for the tyke who can’t sit up on his own.

The parents were taken aback by this decision. They wanted to experience the event as a family, but will not be able to due to the cost. Instead of accepting financial assistance from others to purchase the ticket, the family went to the media in the hopes of getting the policy changed.

For now, these damn drooling millennials always looking for a handout will have to find their free hockey elsewhere. Old man NHL is keeping them off their lawn!

The NHL has not responded to a request for comment on the ticket policy at the time of publication.

With all that noise in the arena, I'm not sure why would you wanna bring a baby in the first place. Their hearing and their ears are still developing, not to mention how scared it would make them with all the noise going on around them.

Babies get taken to sporting events before and will in the future. Most parents these days put noise blocking ear muffs on. Why are people (in the comments I read there) all of a sudden acting like this is a new thing for people to do when its been common practice as far back as I can remember

Google search gave me this which says that the NHL as a league does not have a policy but the team itself sets them.. Now when you do a winter classic or all star event that isn't the normal place for games and maybe that Stadium itself as it's own rules who knows.

I know they contacted someone and it seems while they need a ticket, I'm sure there is supposed to be some kind of kid ticket things mainly to know how many are in the building for Fire Codes and ext, kids count as a body. It sounds like the person they talk to wasn't aware more then anything.

It's a side effect of the helicopter parent epidemic. Everything has to be kid-friendly, even events traditionally enjoyed by adults.

As far as I've always known if the kid doesn't need a seat of their own you don't have to pay if their also under a certain age. We took our 1 year old to a Royals game this summer and didn't have to buy him a ticket.

Not the last two years. If Global Warming is real then praise it because it's been like the two warmest winters in Canadian history two years in a row! So far it hasn't snowed once yet so it might be going for the hat trick!

I gotta echo the sentiments of a couple people who asked why you'd take an infant to the game?

It's a distraction for you, they get nothing out of it and seems like more hassle than it's worth. Seems like I've been seeing more and more people who take their infant to EVERYTHING. I know that babysitting can be expensive, but sometimes you need to bite the bullet and just know that it's okay to not include them in every activity in your life.

If it's after my lifetime then who cares. But at the same time I want to see Snowpiercer become a reality. Decisions decisions.
