Holy crap, Solo was really boring. Too busy making comments on our universe to make it feel like a galaxy far, far away. Also f*** that droid. Granted, Star Wars being science fiction is a bit of a stretch (I'd say it's more fantasy with sci-fi window dressing, personally), but the best science fiction tends to use the setting to make commentary on today's society, from Asimov to Atwood to Star Trek. And the Galactic Empire has always been a fascist, authoritarian state that curbed the rights and liberties of everyone, but especially "undesirables."

People act like the "SJW agenda" in Star Wars is a new Disney mandate, but it's always been there.

I see the need for a Boba or Obi-Wan solo film. I think Angry Joe put it best in his review not many folks wanted a Solo Movie

Saw Solo today. Cameo aside (and holy shit was I happy to see it), it lived up to its "completely unnecessary" reputation. I mean, I get it; they wanted a new Star Wars movie every year and needed something this year. But why Han Solo? Most of the origin-y aspects of his character didn't need shown to work and the plot as a whole was pretty bland.
It was fine I suppose, but Rogue One was galaxies better and I'm just kinda wishing it was next year for Episode IX.

What would even be in an Obi-Wan solo movie? Just him contemplating life on Tatooine between Episodes 3 and 4? To be perfectly honest there was no need in basically any of the SW movies since 1983. I could argue Revenge of the Sith needed to be made, but everything else is either a bit pointless or a shameless cash grab. If people care that much just let them read various comics or books that have been made over the past 30 years. None of this stuff needed to be made, and after Episode 9 I wish Disney would just call it a day. At this point the fanbase may make them by simply not going.
I took a look on Deadline.com at The Last Jedi. On the surface it did quite well, most profitable movie of 2017 at 417.5 million in overall profit. But that is with doing 1.3 billion at the global box office. What happens if the next movie's box office stalls out under 1 billion (Ep. 9, not Solo). If the next movie declines over 400 million they could be looking at an actual Star Wars episode film that tanks and loses money. Given that Force Awakens did 2 billion dollars and Last Jedi was down to 1.3 billion and Solo is a massive flop, this is a fairly scary trend.

OK, I've seen comments complaining about the SJW Solo and... did I miss something?
The only thing I saw SJWish was the droid - and yeah, she was annoying. I was glad when she was blasted into pieces. But other than that there was nothing really that stood out.

When the financials were released production costs, advertising, gross points for those with them in their contracts, and various other expenses meant Marvel/Disney didn't see a penny from the first $1.1 billion. Huh? Really now? I was under the impression that studios received all of the box office sales? So you're telling me that Marvel/Disney still hasn't seen a penny out of the $1.909 billion that Infinity War has grossed worldwide? Officially, Return of the Jedi still hadn't turned a profit at the point in time Disney purchased the franchise (not sure if it did after that). Someone, David Prowse I think, made a bit of noise about having never seen a dime from the movie in royalties and it was explained that it was because the film was still in the red on the books.

I don’t think it has to do with the movie but rather the online drama around the film and the way the fans and the people behind the movie are handling it. Twitter. Or Reddit. Go figure.

Yeah, tbf it did seem like it was mocking SJW types. Still found her annoying though. I did like droid riot scene that she caused. The gonk droid just stomping over the control panel made me laugh.

I think the key word there is "officially"; Hollywood bookkeeping is some of the most creative and shady accounting known to man. Studios will claim wildly successful projects like Lord of the Rings lost money just to keep from handing out the points.

If you told me 5 years ago that Disney would be disappointed with how much money their Star Wars movie made while diving in a pool of gold coins like Scrooge MeDuck over their Marvel movies, really I wouldn’t have been that surprised.

I can’t believe I’m getting involved but the only problem I have with his name is it isn’t “Harrison Ford”, but I loved the movie so I don’t care. Yeah, it was a lot of fun. I don't go into the STAR WARS movies expecting them to be anything more than what they are and were always designed to be; fun popcorn movies, and this most certainly delivered on being that. Plus, I watched it at a drive in on a beautiful night under the stars. Perfect way to watch a STAR WARS movie.

That wouldn't have surprised me, but what would is it handily losing to Deadpool.

If you told me 5 years ago that Disney would be disappointed with how much money their Star Wars movie made while diving in a pool of gold coins like Scrooge MeDuck over their Marvel movies, really I wouldn’t have been that surprised. It's interesting to think about: while the hardcore Star Wars fanbase grew up with a slew of books, comics, games, and other tie-ins that stay constantly engrossed in that universe, to the general public Star Wars was a couple of trilogies that told ongoing stories over the course of three movies, and that was pretty much it. People have certain expectations of Star Wars when it's in film form, I guess, and diving headlong into "let's release one of these every years" might prove to be an interesting canary in the coal mine experiment (albeit a costly one) to illustrate how franchises that began on film might have a hard time adjusting to the current era and becoming the type of franchises that get annual releases. Releasing a ton of comic book movies in quick succession, meanwhile, at the very least is a practice that somewhat reflects the actual publishing of, well, comic books. I still feel really oversaturated with them at this stage, but the box office has clearly said otherwise about where the general public's at with them, so there must be something to it.

I heard people over the weekend using the fact that Ron Howard coming into the movie late as a reason why the box office has been so (for a SW movie, & considering Disney's expectations) low.
IIRC, the idea of a Han Solo origin movie was kinda getting crapped on - or just wasn't seen as a huge buzzworthy event - since it'd been announced. I figured that doomed the project's box office well before anything else...

An origin story where Han Solo was a true believer raised with Imperial propaganda, joining the Imperial Navy, THEN becoming disillusioned about the Empire (likely due to a friendship with a certain Wookiee slave) would have been much more interesting. Instead Han Solo has always been Han Solo.

It bein kinda mediocre box office wise doesn't seem that complicated when even your die hard fans only have tepid anticipation for it. I don't know that I've seen or heard anyone go "I'm so excited for Solo!" even when it was first slated.
Not a bad movie at all, but one you could easily wait till Netflix or whatever.

Return of the Jedi had a budget of about 32.5 million dollars circa 1983 and made 475 million dollars. If someone is saying it hasn't turned a profit then that studio exec is a liar and should be taken to court over it. I recall Paramount doing something like this with Forrest Gump back in the 90s to avoid royalties.
Has it occurred to anyone that killing Han off in the main series and then doing an origin story later was a horrible idea? Old school SW fans are still pissed at killing Han in the first place and probably refused to go, while newer fans just saw this old dude die and had no particular investment in seeing the younger version.
