After reading through the Cody/Brandi vs Bennett/Maria depreciation thread, I just couldn't stop thinking that Rhodes voluntarily went to TNA on his own. Now obviously, everyone in TNA is there on their own free will. Although I wouldn't put it past Dixie to pull a gun on them to make them sign their contracts. However, all of the ex-WWE guys were released, not by choice, outside of the Hardys who came when the company was in much better financial state and paid competitively. They are in TNA, because they can no longer work in WWE, so it is completely understandable.
Cody actually demanded his release and while he did have "dream matches" in the indies in front of a total of 200 fans, it seems his end game was to go to TNA. Now I know his booking wasn't great in WWE, but he still made a lot of money, even being on the main card of Wrestlemania in his home state. Yet he actually prefers to work in a company that is clearly on the brink of bankruptcy and complete disaster. Let alone a company that treats their employees like less than human beings. Why would anyone in their right mind do this?

He just wanted to get his wife to wrestle on TV and TNA was the only one stupid enough to let it happen.

Nah, Cody's smart. He used them to get his wife a job, probably got his money upfront, and didn't actually sign anything.

I left a job that was paying stupid amounts of money for another job that paid significantly less, but appreciates me, gives me career progression and I'm not working ridiculous amounts of overtime.
Basically, I took fulfillment over money. Not sure if that was ultimately Cody's way of thinking, just saying that it's not just about the money or the fame sometimes, some people have different priorities.
And yes, this is the only situation where I can even come close to comparing myself to Cody.

Going down that route though, do you leave the biggest company in your respective employment for a company that A) might not pay you on time B) might not actually exist in six months time?

But Cody went to a company that treats their employees like garbage and might not pay them. I get it Dixie is a big ex-WWE mark, but without Panda's money I can't imagine she pays much better than bigger indy shows.

You guys above aren't wrong, my point just being that he could have chosen the super easier route of sticking in the WWE, making bank, probably can get a job for life.
But he didn't, and for him to actually leave a decent-sounding gig must mean he cares about something else, or realise the risk of going to the indies and TNA is worth it.
I just hope he's not entirely bitter or anything, and that he's happy.

It's not like he's a TNA guy full time though. He's a freelance dude who happened to stop by TNA during one of their gigantic tapings and is presumably wrestling in a lot of other places right now.

Cody actually demanded his release and while he did have "dream matches" in the indies in front of a total of 200 fans, it seems his end game was to go to TNA. This has never, at any point, seemed like his end game at all. Honestly, given he's popped up in so many promotions, I think he just wants to have a match in as many promotions' canons as possible. He's been part of the WWE system his whole life, knew there were two people in TNA he always wanted to work with (if you've seen Michael Bennett's 2012 work at "The Prodigy" Mike Bennett, you can tell where a character/style like his at that point against Cody would be compelling) and so he signed a BY APPEARANCE PER MATCH contract from the jump with no obligations or responsibilities with TNA whatsoever. If TNA was his end game, why on Earth would his appearing at ROH's Final Battle be announced in, what, August (?) and have him still make his TNA on-screen debut before then?

When he left WWE, he may not have had TNA in mind. But there's only a few places where you can go and make an...impact. (pun not intended)
Also it's not an exclusive contract, he was with TNA for a few dates. Then he'll do the same by joining a few other companies.
Maybe you should ask why Aron Rex did it instead.

Hes going to work for ROH, New Japan, and whom ever else he wants to work for. He's worked PWG and Evolve. He didn't leave for TNA, he left to work the indies and to grow as a performer. WWE didn't want him to stop being Stardust, and they didnt know what they wanted to do with Stardust. He was dead as a performer. Good for him for venturing out and building himself. TNA is an indie promotion with TV that does tapings once a month and at least used to pay. Im not going to watch it anymore, some people might and it helps indie performers get their name out. To try to say "Cody dumb he left big WWE for failing TNA" is just not reality, because it's just a stop. Also: www.rohwrestling.com/news/cody-rhodes-signed-compete-roh-s-final-battle

Cody openly said in an interview TNA has Moose and Bennett who are on his list which is why he went to TNA while Adam Cole is in ROH which is why he has dates with them. It's about doing what he can to work the people on his list
