The rise of another big city in America? I'm talking from pretty much a town to a metropolis? Like not New York or Los Angeles big, but more around like maybe Indianapolis. It's just something I've been thinking about. I know there many towns, and smaller cities that have grown quite a bit over the years, but I'd say its been a long time since we saw an actual big city just rose up. Maybe Orlando was the last one after Disney came in, and that city grew like wildfire.
I know big cities can't just rise up out of nowhere Sim City style. There are tons of factors involved, like location, local resources, and things like that. It seems like today since the suburban development of many cities now, there isn't much of a chance a new big city coming into play. But it could happen. I know this is a weird topic, but like I said, it was just something on my mind.

Ever's a real long time, so, probably. It'd probably be in relation to some sort of industry or a "oh shit, we found like, a lot of diamonds!" kind of factor.

With cities in China and the Middle East. I don't want to get political. But towns and cities along the US/Mexico border could get a big population boost if Trump's Wall actually goes ahead. What I mean is when the Hoover Dam was built they needed to build a place for the builders to live.. that place became Boulder City.

You're more likely to see cities merging, Mega City One-style.

All the science in the world isn't gonna save New Orleans. So that's gonna have to go somewhere. You may have an obligation to rebuild but not to put it back where you found it.

Possibly somewhere in North Dakota?
But that would depend on an oil recovery and the ability to convince people to move to North Dakota.

FANopolis will soon be the talk of this nation. Built on the remnants of the old city that was only known as Naptown.

As building techniques and technology improves, I'm sure we'll end up with another big city at some point in the future. I think a bigger priority at the moment is fixing up the cities we already have, though.

Well, global warming is a real issue whether or not you choose to believe it or not. They are already moving some coastal communities in Alaska farther inland as the melting of the ice caps have raised the sea level enough to warrant that. 40% or so of the world's population live along coastal regions and they all will need to be relocated should the polar ice caps continue to melt.
As far as your example of a not-so-big city, Indianapolis has over 850,000 people (ranked as 14th most populous in the US) and even more people in the surrounding area. If that's small, then what is big in your eyes?

It's inevitable. The UN predicts that by 2100 there will be 11.7 billion people on the planet, with the U.S. population expected to reach around 500 million in that same timescale if current growth remains constant. Those extra 191 million people are gonna have to live somewhere.
