Was he an American traitor only because Barry couldn't master the fake Russian accent of Ivan and Nikita?

Pretty much, although to say Ivan mastered it is questionable. All I can hear with Ivan is gruff French.

Yeah, I mean Nikita outright learned Russian for his gimmick and spoke it as much as possible. That is about as dedicated as you can get.

I only knew Barry Darsow as Smash initially, so when I saw a picture of the three 'Russians' in PWI, I had a near meltdown when I recognised the tattoo and face shape. I genuinely thought that I was the only one to know that Smash had a past. Ah, the innocence of a kayfabe youth...

Was he an American traitor only because Barry couldn't master the fake Russian accent of Ivan and Nikita? Not quite, no. He originally wasn't part of the Koloff deal; Don Kernodle was the Koloff's American turncoat ally early on. At the same time, Darsow as an American turncoat called Crusher Darsow in Mid-South, teaming with Nikolai Volkoff. During this run he changed his name to Kruschev, and only after that did he head to Crockett to replace the departing Kernodle. Now, as I am a tad unfamiliar with his earliest Mid-South days, I want to say he started the Crusher Darsow gimmick there without the Russian connection at first, before he started teaming with Volkoff. But I could be mistaken on that part.

He was really pasty looking, he stood out with that group.
Barry Darsow deserves a HOF induction just for all the crazy gimmicks he had, yet made them work.

This makes me sad that Darsow was never one of the many people playing the Doink gimmick, as a balding, slightly pudgy man with green hair, he'd be Krusty Kruschev.

Make sure he'd have a female companion, so he can yell at the fans every 10 seconds, "DON'T TOUCH MAH WOMAN!" You AWF fans will get it. (If we're going with the Doink route, make her a little person.)
Damn, this would be funny as hell.
