Dead at 87 after battling Alzheimers. His place on the show's history can't be understated. Stefano was such a great villain and every time I recall one of his dastardly deeds I'd say in my JR voice "That damn Stefano DiMera". His character was killed earlier this year and you knew that was it for him on the show so I was disappointed that his exit was done so poorly.

My mom used to watch that show a lot when I was little. So I remember him very well.
Also, Alzheimer's can f*** right off.

Dont they just recast characters and pretend its the same people? Sometimes, but that's mostly the younger set who get recast when fan response is poor, or they decide to move on to other shows or decide they want to try movies or primetime. Usually when it's an iconic character like Stefano DiMera, no. Most old school characters pass on as well (or disappear for awhile until the show decides what to do with them) when their performers get too sick to continue the role or pass on. Like Bold and the Beautiful's Sally Spectra*, or Young and the Restless' Katherine Chancellor. Most soap execs have enough respect for the genre, or fear of their fans' reaction, to know better than to do something like that. Guiding Light did recast Roger when his actor fell seriously ill and I still hear complaints from fans about it sometimes and that soap's been canceled for seven years by now. Soap fans are die hard. *What they did with Sally when Darlene Conley passed is my favorite because they had a gag going for years where a character would say they'd gotten another card from her, going on about sitting pool side with a bunch of cabana boys tending to her every need. Haha.

RIP to the Phoenix himself. Dude was the M. Bison of daytime TV and I had a lot of fond memories of him back in the 90s when I stayed home during Summer breaks. My first exposure to him oddly enough was during his short lived face run when he had amnesia. But once he turned heel I could see what all the hype was about.
RIP Mr. Mascolo
