Take one of the more cinematic franchises Metal Gear Solid; I love those games, but as much as Kojima clearly wants to direct, those stories are incomprehensible, convoluted dreck.
You'd have to strip away hours of nonsense to get a coherent plot, and then you're left with a standard action movie rip-off.

for that to happen there'd need to be a string of movies that were both legitimately good and financially successful first. because with the exception of a few stinkers comic book movies have largely been at the very least watchable and turn at the very least a decent profit. given the history I just don't see that happening with video game movies at this juncture. there was a really long stint where that wasn't the case for comic book movies too. Then they started getting relatively successful with lesser known comic books that didn't really follow the books either visually or storywise (or both in some cases). Like X-men, Blade, and you could even put the Batman movies in this category since Burton's Batman acts entirely differently than how he does in the comics. (About the only exception to this was Superman in the 70's but even then Luthor in the movie didn't act like Luthor in the books either... even at the time he didn't act like Hackman's he was more of a generic mad scientist.) then Raimi's Spider-man happened, proving that you could make a movie about a guy in a brightly colored spandex suit and people would see and accept it... this was a rather large step since even the X-men made fun of the idea in the first movie before getting into their black leather outfits. (You were expecting yellow spandex?) There would need to be something similar to set it off and for that to happen it will need to have more than one movie to set it in motion. Filmmakers would also need to learn that just taking a popular game with a generally well regarded story isn't going to cut it because the majority of those make it nearly impossible to film because of how personal the universe is due to gameplay options. I mean let's say they make Mass Effect and they base it on the games and not just in that universe... the minute they announce who was cast for the lead you are guaranteed to piss off at least half of the fan base because it doesn't fit THEIR Shepard. You'd have to strip away hours of nonsense to get a coherent plot, and then you're left with a standard action movie rip-off. Or take something like GTA and put it into a movie... and you literally get every gangster movie ever...

There was a time when comic book movies were a joke but now you have the caliber of Anthony Hopkins, Will Smith, Robert Redford, Micheal Douglas, Kenneth Branagh (as a director) showing up. Wait what? Are you referring to the time when high A-list actors like Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman were doing blockbuster Superman movies, or the time when some of the highest paid actors of their time Jack Nicholson and Jim Carrey were breaking doors down to play Batman villains?

I'm probably the only one but I really liked the Warcraft movie. Both as a movie fan and as a fan of the game.

As others have pointed out, gameplay often trumps storyline when it comes to games, so it's an uphill battle when it comes to adaptations.
It's a lot easier to develop a screenplay based around something with greatly detailed source material than something that just has a loose plotline.
If you think about some of the great bombs of video game films (Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, etc.), the screenwriters did a poor job of filling in the many blanks in the plot lines.
So if you've got a compelling idea to flesh out the stories, then it's certainly possible to craft a good film, but it's just not an easy task.

I'm probably the only one but I really liked the Warcraft movie. Both as a movie fan and as a fan of the game. I've never played a Warcraft game, but I enjoyed the movie. The Orcs were really well done. It was actually the underwhelming human actors that brought the movie down a bit.

Let's let em get ONE good movie first. Even something like Mortal Kombat wasn't something you could call good all the way around. And that's your gold standard. Well, pyrite maybe. Some people seem to hold up the Silent Hill movie as an example of a good video game movie, for reasons I can't comprehend.

Even if it is (I can't speak to it as I haven't watched it), it didn't make even a blip on the radar. So lemme add the caveat of a good one that makes any sort of wider audience impact.

I've never heard anyone call it good and it has almost nothing to do with the game series but there is the Resident Evil franchise.

Don't think so. I think a decade or two from now though, you're gonna see a lot of T.V Shows being adapted into stand alone films.

I will say this: make it in a three parter and I bet FFVIII would be amazing in movie form. I mean, sure the last movie would fly over everyone's heads but still. Have the first one end at the end of disk 1 with the failed assassination attempt, maybe with a later shot of everyone else in prison with no Squall in sight, have the second end with Squall finding Rinoa IN SPACE~! and getting rescued by Deus Ex Ragnarok and leave the rest for the final movie. Heck, there's a bunch of stuff they could cut (we don't really need the Balamb lockdown or NORG in movie form) but the rest could fit rather nicely. And besides: amost very character in the game is human, so no need for uber CGI creatures for the most part (well, GF's would have to show up, but maybe just a few select ones, like the three "starters" (Quetzacotl, Shiva and Ifrit), Brothers, Leviathan, Cerberus, Bahamut, maybe make Diablos Seifer's GF, etc. plus a few monsters and mechanical enemies).
Or just release a full length feature with all the tutorials.

I think if given the opportunity there is a story there within the Metal Gear concept to turn into a film. Metal Gear- Snake's very first mission as a rookie and only have Roy Campbell as his back-up via radio communication, the building friendship between Snake and Gray Fox, and Big Boss being revealed as the traitor. Metal Gear 2- Big Boss returning in some fashion and the Grey Fox heel turn which pushes Snake into becoming the ultimate recluse. Metal Gear Solid- Nothing needs to be changed. Just adapt it from the game and you have a pretty damn good action espionage film there. Now where it gets ridiculous is Sons of Liberty, Snake Eater, and Guns of the Patriots.

Only if you pick a more cinematic game, like Life is Strange or Heavy Rain.

It's funny you spell it out like that. I know of one other franchise that's like that now: Because that's exactly what it could be. It could start out as a slick, competent espionage thriller with an off-the-wall twist...that eventually turns into some Fast and Furious-like craziness that barely has anything to do with espionage.

The issue with video game movies, to me, is that a large part of what makes video games what they are is the interactive aspect of them. You feel like you're as much a part of the story as the characters are. When you take that out and try to tell a straightforward story based on the original game, it suffers.

I just want the Sonic movie to break 70% on Rotten Tomatoes. As long as it's better than Mario's movie I'll consider it a victory of sorts.
How do you look at castles and mushroom people and think "post apocalyptic cyberpunk fungus world"? No wonder Hoskins was so pissed.

I don't know, it'd be really hard for video game movies to become the new comic book movies. First of all, so many video game movies would be overwhelmed by them falling into other genres. For example, Punch Out would fall into the Rocky/sports movie. Call of Duty, a war movie, ect. Fighting games are really hard because the movies always want to focus on one character....and almost always choose the wrong one (Guile and/or Chun Li instead of Ryu in the Street Fighter movies for example).
