I was just thinking this looking at the talent involved with the Assassin's Creed movie. Micheal Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendon Gleeson, Charlotte Rampling. Video game movies are lucky if they can get one name actor. but is there any chance viseo game movies could become respectable? I mean not winning Oscars or anything but held in the same regard comic book movies are nowadays? There was a time when comic book movies were a joke but now you have the caliber of Anthony Hopkins, Will Smith, Robert Redford, Micheal Douglas, Kenneth Branagh (as a director) showing up. Aside from Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft video game movies never had that level of talent. So between Assassin's Creed and the Tomb Raider movie due next year do you think video game movies could be somewhat respectable and leave the days of Uwe Boll long behind?

Not until studios stop treating them as cash grabs which don't need effort. The only reason why Ubisoft seem like they're trying is because Assassin's Creed is one screw up away from being completely ruined thanks to Unity.
Like I can't overstate just how badly Ubisoft needs the movie to succeed.

There would need to be a majorly successful video game movie to show that it's possible to have major blockbuster success with them. The closet I can say that's done it is Wreck It Ralph., and even then that's using video games as a subject rather than basing it off one said video game.

It could be but it wont.
I do think what will usurp the Super Hero movie will be the bevy of Anime adaptions coming.
Ghost in the shell , Alita battle angel etc.

The big problem with video game movies is that gamers also need to accept that secretly...well, the source material isn't really there.
With comic book movies (or even anime adaptations), there is a large enough, rich enough source material in the comic you can make it to a good movie, and the difference from pictures to live-action is different enough to make it worthwhile.
With video games, it's killed on both sides. Either the game doesn't particularly have an incredibly rich source material to play with outside of "here's your villains. Make them die", in which case a movie based on it would inevitably be pretty bad...or, on the other side, the game has an amazing source material story- but the game itself is so in-depth that it's better to just PLAY THE GAME and experience it yourself instead of watching the cutscenes for the story.
The only way we're going to see a video game movie cross over to get to comic book movie adaptations would only happen now that Let's Plays are a thing and "people watching other people play video games" is viable- and even then, the video game that breaks out to be a bonafide movie would probably have to be a live-action adaptation of Final Fantasy 7 to even have a chance (Not Advent Children, an actual movie following the FF7 story straight through.)

Absolutely not!
There will never be a good video game movie because it's very hard about dealing with the transition between the game & the film.
Comics have been difficult because if you're faithful you may repeat controversial moments people hated & if you say "f*** this" to the lore (Catwoman, Man of Steel, 2015 Fantastic 4), it becomes a horrible mess.
The weird thing is that video games already incorporate cinematography but for whatever reason, they fail to make the adjustments.

Let's let em get ONE good movie first. Even something like Mortal Kombat wasn't something you could call good all the way around. And that's your gold standard. Well, pyrite maybe.

I've read more than a few times that this is Fassbender's pet project, and he's had to pull a few strings to make this happen. His involvement, especially now that he's a high profile enough star, may ensure that the studio does its due diligence.
And maybe that's what it will take for video game movies to be elevated, is enough star power behind it to ensure it's done right.

The problem is that video games are not only a vastly different medium than movies, they are in an entirely separate category from movies, comics and novels.
In video games, the mechanics of the game are the focus, not the story itself. Sometimes the way the story works can depend on your game play. so it is very tricky. I can see one video game based film become a success, but I doubt we're gonna see a whole slew of films like with Marvel.

Isn't there an Uncharted movie in the works with Mark Wahlberg? Or maybe the Nathan Fillion fans got them to scrap it.
I also heard some studio wants to do The Last of Us.

The best video game movie I can think of seeing that wasn't either awful or cheesy but still bad was Prince of Persia.
So no I don't see it happening. Comic books have a huge history of stories to delve into for movie making purposes. Games on the whole do not and those that do have it as background fluff or are too niche to be enjoyed by the masses. The other side is that video games do often deal with the ridiculous either in plot, theme or location.
Street Fighter could work but it won't until hollywood realises we actually want to see an impossibly agile 7ft tall native american man have a fight with an all american fireball throwing karate guy be the focus, not the family troubles of Chun-Li.

I like how you guys are talking as if Super Mario Brothers didn't already replace Citizen Kane as the best movie ever made.

No
Video game movies are just shitty versions of the games they are based on, and you can't even play.

for that to happen there'd need to be a string of movies that were both legitimately good and financially successful first. because with the exception of a few stinkers comic book movies have largely been at the very least watchable and turn at the very least a decent profit. given the history I just don't see that happening with video game movies at this juncture.

I think one of the biggest problems is... let's pick on Doom. This should have been one of the most simple video game movie concepts. All you needed to do was figure out a way to have some Space Marines blow the shit out of a bunch of demons on mars as they try to escape a test-gone-wrong. it should have been a 90's action movie full of one liners, poorly written plotlines that only made just enough sense to justify the violence and monsters dying everywhere.
Instead we got like 2 minutes of action and an hour of boring shit trying to establish a history and a story that nobody remembers.
