From the trailers and bits of gameplay footage (from that recent JonTron video) I've seen, it looks nothing like a Resident Evil game. Ironically, it looks more like a Silent Hill game with a side of Blair Witch Project. I haven't any zombie, plaga or any of the usual body-horror monsters you find in this franchise, there is no sign of Umbrella being involved, the main characters are nowhere to be seen and in fact, I don't think they have even shown any enemy yet bu they have shown a weird dilapidated cabin full of genuinely creepy shit.
Don't get me wrong, it looks really cool to me and I like how it seems to finally be dropping the action-oriented style of 4-6 and instead going for a more psychological approach (I especially appreciate the absence of jump scares), it's just that it looks so far removed from any previous incarnation of Resident Evil that it's weird to me that it's part of the series and apparently not even a spin-off, reboot or anything like that but indeed an actual sequel.

Some of it has apparently been because the demo is there to showcase mechanics and a small portion of the setting. They've deliberately kept the more usual Resident Evil stuff out of sight so it'll not be driven into the ground by the time the game was out, though certainly PT/Silent Hills was an inspiration.
From what I hear, there's a lab away from the house that at the least a portion of the game will concern, so it'll continue to be all Biohazard-y.

"Absence of jump scares"? Well clearly someone hasn't seen all the gameplay videos/trailers, because they've been showing plenty of jump scare moments.

RE died with the Nemesis. 4 was sick, but it ain't the same thing. 5 was just hack 4 and 6 was just infuriating. Who knows with 7? They'll either spin out of it and make it disgusting or it'll be the most derivative, non-genre commtial piece of trash you have ever seen in your life. But hey, at least Capcom is making money...

There's pretty obvious signs of Umbrella involvement in the demo. There seems to be your traditional biological terror monsters and problems.
I don't think it will be a complete departure by any means--but it is certainly going to a drastic change of pace.
