For those who are not aware, in MLB the only difference in rules between the National League and the American League is that AL teams can assign a player who isn't on defense to bat for the pitcher. Should the NL follow suit, now that the AL has had the rule in place for over 40 years? Or should the DH rule be eliminated entirely?

Don't add it to NL.
I like the distinction in leagues. It's like US States, and I like that they have distinguishing characteristics/laws, but still fit under the same umbrella.
But if absolute copy-catting is the only way to go, then definitely don't add it to NL.
Without rehashing a statement in another thread, the DH is more legit/necessary to me than the obsession with Saves and Closers. That's really where revisionists should focus their attention. In a lot of ways, it would change the competition of the game for the better. But then again, we're in the era of flair and identity crisis, where many progressives want to shame the gamesmanship out of baseball.

I have no issue with it remaining an AL only thing, my only issue is the "not real ballplayers" crap you hear from many of the old school HoF voters.

I initially misread the subject header as "Designated Hitlers".

I initially misread the subject header as "Designated Hitlers". That only ever happens on ice rinks.

I hope they do once Bartolo Colon retires. He's the only reason to keep pitchers hitting.

I do not see NL games too often so maybe it just seems fun because I do not watch it on a daily basis - but I love having pitchers hit because of the strategic element it adds to the game.

I'm in the camp they should tweak the DH to replace weaker position players. I'd rather have Carlos Rodon swing a bat than whoever the White Sox has catching that day.

Are there any other sports where teams are part of the same organisation and compete against each other but play by different rules? It would be like in the NFL if teams in the NFC couldn't have a designated kicker and a linebacker had to make field giaks

I'm not a fan of it but I would honestly like it to be across the board. Can't take it from the AL because the players union would never allow it since you're taking a payday from various players who are only fit to hit. Thing is NL teams lose out on acquiring or retaining older players, who may still be able to hit but not field as well. I kind of would've liked to have kept Holiday's bat in the order (maybe not batting third) if we had the DH. Same for Yadi in a few years, even if it's just because I'd like for players like that to be able to retire with their team. Just my opinion

Since hitters who don't field aren't 'complete players', aren't pitchers who don't hit also not complete players?

I want designated everything. Designated hitters, runners, fielders, butt-scratchers.
Think of how great it would have been to see someone like Rey Ordonez play the field and not have to see him as a 'hitter'.

To think, one year (I wanna say 1974) the A's had THREE designated runners at the same time. Baseball finally told Charlie Finley to cut that shit out, so they kept the two who could actually play.
