So? Overall, which guy had the better year? Sami Zayn or James Ellsworth?

Its embarrassing for a great athlete like Zayn, but Ellsworth had a much more memorable run this year.
All I remember about Zayn this year is having Shinsukes only great match, that never ending feud with Owens and being manhandled by Braun.
Ellsworth on the other hand has been killing it on Smackdown and will be someone I would remember a lot more later on.
There's still time for things to change since you can only go so far with Ellsworth, and as mentioned earlier, Zayn is one of the best out there. Some decent booking is all that's needed.

Zayn had one of my favorite matches of the year and a long time with Nakamura and a clinic with Owens as well, but the dudes just stagnant right now and needs direction which he has sorely lacked since his callup.
Ellsworth was extremely over, still is as a heel, and technically beat the baddest wrestler on the planet right now Three Times, got his revenge on Strowman eliminating him from Survivor Series, overall, he has had a fundamentally better booked year, also, he got Carmella... that's another point.

Zayn wasn't introduced well to the main roster and since beating Owens in July he's done nothing of note till recently other than forming a team with Neville to beat the Dudleys in a match that people still talk about to this very day.Plus I don't see Sami beating Aj Styles anytime soon.
Ellsworth was a pathetic local competitor who got a contract beat the champ more than once and has been the main focus of smackdown live for the last 3 or 4 months and now has Carmella.

Depends on what you mean. From a personal life standpoint, James Ellsworth went from being an unknown, Maryland-area independent wrestler to a recurring character in WWE to getting a WWE contract. No one knew him in 2015. Now he's part of big storylines on SmackDown.
You could argue that he had the better year in terms of how things changed for him.

I'm bias, in the fact that I've been done with Ellsworth for a while now and Zayn has has at least memorable matches throughout the year. Zayn for me

The ascension had a better year than zayn, atleast they stayed in there expectation... All right, I get it. Zayn deserves a better push. But to say that a team that won only TWO TV MATCHES ALL YEAR did better than him just because Zayn didn't do as good as everybody hoped? At least Zayn had a winning TV record in 2016. That's the kind of hyperbole that leads people to think "NOBODY IS HAPPY UNLESS THEIR GUY IS WORLD CHAMPION".

The guy came in as a upper midcard guy that actually mattered, then floundered into nothingness and got left off PPVs. The shining stars are two guys that quite frankly no one remembered existed. They were on tv, got a gimmick and atleast everyone knows their names

Ellsworth easily had the better year. Dumb question, is he doing house shows? If so, how is the reaction he's getting???

Depends on how you measure it. Zayn finally got a callup but probably feels like he isn't being used right - and he's not really as over as I think anybody expected him to be except in smark towns.
Ellsworth on the other hand, if you measure the best case scenario he will have had in his head after jobbing to Braun up against what he has subsequently got, 2016 was probably the best year of his life despite everything else that's happened this year. He's probably made more money in a few months than he has in his entire life, he's wrestled for the most prestigious championship in wrestling history against AJ f***ing Styles, he has merchandise and a secure job. Honestly, I think that simply because of how the individual person will have perceived it Ellsworth will have had the better year.
