... but using Roman - rather than Reigns - for this graphic? Are they trying to give him the human touch? The "we call our underdog babyfaces by their first names" approach? If the roles were reversed they'd undoubtedly use Jericho. If this were the 80s, it would be surname every single time. Obviously there are exceptions to this: For example I consider Eddie to have been acceptable. But this just seems off to me.

* Disclaimer: I'm on day 3 of a January detox and I appear to be niggling at the most inane things. I just watched the Raw highlights and found myself cursing the cost of pyro.

I guess it just rolls off the tongue better for some reason. Like how people usually use "Kofi" instead of "Kingston" for the short hand name for Kofi Kingston.

Don't you see all the recaps? They dumb things down as far as possible as they don't trust the audience to follow things.
Using Reigns all the time may at some point cause confusion as he's also a reigning champion, if he wins the world title he'll be in the middle of two separate title reigns and also be called Reigns. How can anybody be expected to understand that?
Better to call him Roman so there's no such confusion.

They don't want people getting confused and thinking they're talking about Luther Reigns.

Yeah, I don't like when wrestlers are called by their first names. Like...it's always 'John' instead of just Cena and it comes off awkward imo. It makes it seem even more like a soap opera. Even freaking heels are calling their rivals by a first name basis, which doesn't seem right. CM Punk had a bad habit of this. Probably because refering to them by last name makes it seem like a sport and we can't have that, right Vince?

And people now don't care or remember they used to have a first name or in some cases, a last name.

Honestly I still think Antonio Cesaro and Adrian Neville are still better names than the alternatives. Rusev was the right call. Then there's the reverse with Charlotte that I'm... Torn on. I get the logic of that change, since it makes her sound more official having a full name and most of the division does at this point, but the name itself of 'Charlotte Flair' just doesn't sound good or flow well and it's awkward how people have to constantly refer to her by full name like they're afraid you'll forget.

What I mean is wrestlers with a first and last name are always (obviously an exaggeration) called by their first and it just seems a bit 'off' to me. Why would someone who hates this other person call them by (for example) Randy instead of Orton, when that makes them seem like they are buddy buddy with them? Referring to someone by their surname denotes a sense of detachment, which means it's easier for them to do the shit pro wrestlers tend to do each other. Plus a first name basis comes off as clunky to me, just a personal thing really, no big deal. It's especially awakard for female superstars sincethey, for some wierd reason only have a first name...even they have a surname for their persona.

When I was in the Navy, we called people by their rank and/or last name. Off hours, it was first name or last name. So it doesn't bother me of hearing someone getting called by either name. What does bother me is someone butchering a name like Chris Jericho used to do back in the day. To me, calling someone you are beefing with by their first name is letting the other person know this is personal. When I was pissed with someone, I called them by their full name. Just to let them know I'm for real.

Charlotte Flair is too much of a mouthful to say. Commentators have to slow down to say the full name. It also don't help that WWE changes their stance on her having a last name on a semi weekly basis.

Can't they call him, "Times New Roman", the blandest font going.
His catchphrase could "I'm going to font size you".
His costume is old newspapers printed in the Times New Roman font.
