A Diamond in the Rough on the Playstation1 during the late 90s. Have good memories of the game as despite the simplicity of the fighting engine the game was fun and the music was great including Danzaiver's theme

I find it was really hard not to love a fighting game that was basically a love letter to serialized anime.

Eh, I always preferred Rival Schools. Rival Schools is WAY better. Evil Zone had a fun gimmick, but the gameplay did nothing for me, whereas Rival Schools had a fun cast, excellent gameplay, and is just a lot of fun to play.

I find it was really hard not to love a fighting game that was basically a love letter to serialized anime. Yeah it pretty much was a love letter to anime and its genre. What with the introductions and previews as if the fights were episodes and narration. The entire style could easily convince you that it was a show instead of a fighting game A shame it's overlooked, Yukes owns it but I doubt they even remember it
