ShowBuzz Daily reports that this week’s Smackdown, the first of 2017, brought in 2.596 million viewers. This is down 10% from last week’s 2.885 million viewers. Smackdown managed to beat RAW (2.855 million) for the first time in the “new era” at that time, but couldn’t do it this week, as RAW earned 3.046 million viewers. Smackdown was #10 for the night in cable behind The Have & Have Nots, Curse of Oak Island, Fixer Upper, Hannity, The O’Reilly Factor, The Kelly File, Tucker Carlson, Special Report and The Five. It was #3 in the 18-49 demo, behind The Have & Have Nots and Curse of Oak Island.

Shame, because Smackdown was genuinely great and Raw was mostly ass.

The secret formula is to promote returns. Smackdown needs to promote the return of Curt Hawkins next week to increase ratings.

Two are shows on HGTV, & the other is a stupid History program about people in a snipe hunt.

How dare you suggest The Curse of Oak Island is a stupid show! It's about a bunch of charisma-less old white dudes (and a younger dude with some charisma named Jack Begley) searching for treasure that everyone realizes doesn't exist. It's...ok, kinda stupid, but also amazing.

Sounds horrible How dumb is the typical American Nielsen viewer? A lot of it is that the system is monstrously flawed and outdated, and I think the general demographics of who they end up getting by virtue of wanting people who still watch TV the "traditional" way leads to a lot of bias toward the kinds of people who just watch pundits all night.

It was Megan Kelly's last night on Fox News, so her ratings improved. I do not think there is a high cross over from Smackdown to The Kelly File. Raw had a good rating, but I do not give all the credit to Goldberg. There was no NFL Monday game, and there is a major crossover between Raw and MNF. I rarely watch Raw when MNF is on, even if it is a blow out game or between two crap teams. Next week Raw goes up against the NCAA National Championship game, Alabama is one of the most popular NCAA teams in football and Clemson also very popular. Next week, Raw may lose to Smackdown once again.

Is it really surprising? Last week was a show filled with ppv quality title matches that they promoted the hell out of. This week was just a typical show.
Although it does add credibility to my argument that WWE needs to be hyping their main events all week instead of making them on the spot during the opening segment.

I'm not really surprised, last week was a pretty special circumstance.
The good thing, though, is that SmackDown does at least seem to have locked in at about 2.5 million as its norm, which is better than it was there for awhile, and it shows that with the proper build-up and hook they can get higher in. SmackDown pretty much entered into this whole thing at a disadvantage and it takes longer than six months to really build a show up and attract people to it.

I presume "The Curse of Oak Island" is another one of those "hunter" shows where a group of people spend season after season looking for something that obviously will never be found, like Bigfoot, ghosts, lake monsters, etc...

The best takeaway from this is that SD is at a consistent number.
What was a struggle to get before is now a norm which bodes well for WWE in future TV negotiations.

I certainly don't blame anyone for giving Goldberg more views this week than an Ambrose/Miz main event since Bill is a special attraction (just like Cena's return was before last week) but ask anybody which show was more enjoyable and SDLive is the universal opinion.
I'll also say that if you divide SDLive's rating by 2 hours, and RAW's rating by a 3 hour metric, Smack down still has more viewers per hour

I feel Smackdown still has the stigma that it's not important after the past few years really hurt it. It will take time, but if they are consistent with the writing and presentation, I think SD will beat Raw within the year. I expect it to be purged in the next Draft if one happens, but will still succeed in spite of that unless anything big changes about either show.
