I mean it was a good match, there were really crisp moves and sequences and it flew by despite being nearly an hour long. But I don't understand why it's getting so much hype, I don't really follow NJPW so is it that there's a story behind the match that I'm missing or something? That would make the most sense if there's a context I'm missing, but if that's the case then the announcers didn't really do a good job of explaining what was going on. Ricochet V Will Osprey was miles more entertaining to me. A almost unhealthy love for any Japanese Wrestling and a shit load of sycophants who tell you that the wrestling world runs on your opinions?

And this is the other end of the spectrum. I don't think I'm the end of any spectrum. I just have never gotten the whole "Japanese is better" mentality that seems to peremeate the IWC. Now, admitedly, it's not a hive mind, but there does seem to be a majority. Metlzer has called this the "greatest match of all time" but IMO it's just a long, over chereographed borefest. The "hive mind" is because the regular IWC is a bunch of bandwaggon hopping people that latch onto the hottest thing for a year or two and then forget about it when they realize it's not catered to them. And my comment was more because your justification in your original post was, basically, "it's this good because it's in Japan and nothing else", which was the other end of the "great, not the best" spectrum of the discussion people were having.

I wish more people were talking about Takahashi vs KUSHIDA, tbh. That match was wild.

I wish more people were talking about Takahashi vs KUSHIDA, tbh. That match was wild. It will be one of those matches that will be seen in a better light when separated from the rest of WK11. The match reminded me of the Kamaitachi vs Dragon Lee series where the violence and risk taking escalated with each battle. KUSHIDA had tough battles before but not against someone willing to destroy their body to finish someone else off. The story was that KUSHIDA had to get down to Takahashi's level to fight back and that still wasn't enough. And the return of Dragon Lee means the only person who's actually more dangerous than Takahashi when it comes to that strategy and has a winning record against him is gunning for the IWGP Jr title.

That was my favorite match of the night. KUSHIDA's work on the arm was unbelievable. I didn't think there was any way that Takahashi was going to be able to escape the submissions. I need to re-watch Okada/Omega, I think. I watched the whole show, including the pre-show, and after nearly 5 hours of wrestling and 3 4 star matches leading into it, I was just exhausted. My initial impression was that I thought Okada/Tanahashi last year was better, but I also understood the backstory of that match a bit better (passing of the torch/Okada never beat Tanahashi at WK) so that might be why. That isn't to say Okada/Omega wasn't utterly fantastic, and everything I love about professional wrestling.

I also really liked Bucks-Vice. I don't know if it translated well over the broadcast, but RPG Vice winning with something as simple as a crucifix pin mid-flashy Bucks sequence was huge and really felt like one of those super memorable moments. Really special.
They also let the Vice theme play considerably long after the match, so the entire Tokyo Dome got to hear Trent talk about McGriddles.

Tanahashi vs. Naito was f***ing brilliant and deserves way more love. Yeah, Tanahashi-Natio is a five star match no doubt and also told an incredibly well built story. But, I think it's moreso being overshadowed because 1) During the match people seemed fixated on just how bad Tanahashi's new music is (I mean, it's really, really bad), 2) This wasn't the first ever meeting between Naito-Tanahashi like Omega-Okada was so people kind of knew and took for granted going in that it would be a five star match and 3) Excellent Tanahashi matches being overshadowed has become a Wrestle Kingdom tradition. His Okada matches from WK9 and WK10 were stellar as well (and absolutely necessary for Okada's WK11 story) but happened to go on after 2015's match of the year and 2016's dream-match-turned-biggest-story-of-the-first-quarter.

I have it at **** but will rewatch it at some point and that could change. There was a lot of good about it, but I found some flaws. To each their own. If you personally think it's a five star match, then cool. If not, that's cool too. Wrestling is subjective and it's beautiful.
